“Outstanding success” – BVB wins the group

BVB mastered the supposed group of death with flying colors and moved into the round of 16 of the Champions League as group winners. Coach Edin Terzic is full of praise after the draw against PSG.

Niklas Süle impressed against Paris St. Germain with a monster tackle. But criticism comes from Mehmet Scholl. The European champion is concerned about the weight and fitness of the national player. He chooses clear words.

Former national soccer player Mehmet Scholl praised Niklas Süle – and at the same time heavily criticized what he saw as the Borussia Dortmund national defender’s lack of fitness. “I like seeing him. I also believe that he can be an outstanding central defender,” said the 52-year-old 1996 European champion on Sky. Then Scholl came to criticism: “Maybe he just has to skip the third breakfast or work extra shifts.”

This problem arose during Süle’s time at FC Bayern (2017 to 2022), said Scholl. “He’s a very moody player and you can tell when he’s sitting out for a game. Nevertheless, he would have to pay a little more attention to his physique.”

The former midfielder of the German football record champions (1992 to 2007) still credited Süle with “international quality”. “Ultimately, he has to decide for himself whether it is enough for him to come in sporadically or to become a constant pillar again, which I actually see in him.” Süle had this week in the Champions League in BVB’s 1-1 draw against Paris St. Germain thrilled with a monster tackle against superstar Kylian Mbappé.

Other experts had repeatedly criticized Süle in the past because of his possible overweight and lack of fitness. Former national coach Hansi Flick said after Süles was not nominated: “I think he is still leaving a lot behind. I want him to take a step forward in terms of his attitude and his mentality.”

Süle defends herself against fitness allegations

Süle defended himself decisively against the allegations last fall: “I played every game in the hot phase of the season, every three days. If you do that, then you’re fit. This fitness accusation sticks with me. I deal openly with the topic when I say that I like to go to McDonalds sometimes.” The 28-year-old Süle told the “Ruhr Nachrichten” that he was satisfied with his performance. “That’s why I don’t have to force myself into one direction or be called a fatass for days.”

Scholl also spoke about Toni Kroos in the Sky broadcast. And would support a return of the Real Madrid star to the national team. “I’ve only read this headline in the last few days – that there is a consideration. I have to be honest, I didn’t even think about it for three seconds: the idea has charm,” said Scholl, but also qualified: “If you bring Toni back, then with all the freedom and skills, as an extended arm, so to speak.”

National player Antonio Rüdiger, Kroos’ teammate at Real, had previously made people sit up and take notice during the national team’s crisis with the surprising personnel proposal. “A player like him, who is still at such a high level, really has to be there. I ask him every day,” said Rüdiger.

The 33-year-old Kroos, who became world champion in Brazil in 2014, ended his career in the national team after 106 international matches in the summer of 2021 after the European Championships.
