1. FC Kaiserslautern only needs 152 seconds against Nuremberg to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Fortuna Düsseldorf, on the other hand, makes it exciting. The decision against Magdeburg will only be made in stoppage time.
1. FC Kaiserslautern made it to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, giving its new coach Dimitrios Grammozis an ideal debut. In the atmospheric duel between the traditional clubs, the Palatinate team prevailed 2-0 (0-0) against league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg on Tuesday evening.
Richmond Tachie (75th minute) and Ragnar Ache (78th) scored the goals for Kaiserslautern, who are in the quarter-finals of the cup for the first time in ten years, in front of 48,349 spectators in the Fritz Walter Stadium. Düsseldorf turns game against Magdeburg
Joker Jona Niemiec shot Fortuna Düsseldorf into the cup quarter-finals with a late brace. The substitute striker turned the game between 1. FC Magdeburg and Düsseldorf in just six minutes. Magdeburg’s playmaker Atik was lucky to take the early lead after a quarter of an hour, as his cross from the half field to Luc Castaignos went straight into the goal after a touchdown as the striker could no longer reach the ball. Fortuna, who made four changes after the 5-0 win in Nuremberg, had to go behind early on. That gave little security. In addition, Düsseldorf tried too often with long balls. After the visitors lost the ball, Xavier Amaechie (31′) could have increased the score, but he only hit the outside post from a tight angle.
After the change, Fortuna was suddenly wide awake and played cheerfully. Only the last precise pass was missing too often. The hosts used the Rhinelander’s pressure phase to create good counterattack opportunities. As the FCM wanted to keep the result over time, Silas Gnaka’s loss of the ball initiated the counterattack, which substitute Niemiec completed with a shot into the right corner. When everyone involved expected extra time, the Joker struck again and scored the victory.
“Bitter, yes, but somewhere we briefly fell back into the old patterns – like we had in the league. If you have a game where they have to reward you, where you still have zero until the 86th minute, you have to take it with you,” said captain Amara Condé and added: “Unfortunately we didn’t have the maturity, we got it twice invited.”
