“Sorry but I can’t help but respond to this guy”: the Roma coach’s surprise to his friend and colleague who had just reached the Super Cup final
There were few sporting events on December 25th but among them was the semifinal of the Egyptian Super Cup. It is difficult to estimate how many fans outside the African country followed the match between Future FC and the Pyramids but José Mourinho certainly was among them. Workaholic devourer of football even at Christmas? It’s easy to think so but another reason also pushed the Roma coach to follow this match: the presence of Ricardo Formosinho on the home team’s bench.
Both Portuguese, the two have known each other since their shared experience in Porto, which ended with the Champions League won in 2004. Formosinho was Mourinho’s assistant at the time and later followed Setubal’s coach also in the Premier League, first at United and then to Tottenham. Work yes, but the two are also united by a beautiful friendship which was at its best on Christmas Day.
During the post-match press conference, Formosinho interrupted a journalist: the phone rings and an acronym “JM” appears, clearly visible on the screen he shows to the audience. At that point the Future coach interrupts the chat with the press: “Sorry, but I can’t help but respond to this boy.”

«Hey boss», his «hello» in a friendly tone which introduced the brief conversation with Mourinho on the other end of the phone. It took a few seconds then the conversation ended; time to congratulate his friend for winning the Super Cup final (after having got the better of his opponents at the end of the long series of penalties 14-13) and José said goodbye to Ricardo, probably resuming the family Christmas celebrations. But that was enough to make his presence and closeness felt by the former collaborator whom he respects and to whom he is still linked by a close relationship. And now everyone knows it, from Italy to Egypt.
