SARONNO – He was about to cross the pedestrian crossing, making his way with his white cane, i.e. the extendable cane used by blind people to move around independently, when a car arrived and instead of stopping, it passed over the crossing, breaking the stick and snatching it from the hands of Giuseppe Rosafio. Not only. The driver didn’t even stop.
This is the unfortunate episode of which Giuseppe Rosafio, a blind athlete from the national athletics team and Italian and club champion of the Italian baseball for the blind movement, was the victim. It happened the other day. Rosafio was going to the town hall around 2pm when, crossing via Mazzini, he was overtaken by a car which swept away his stick: “A bad episode – confirms the unharmed man from Saronno – for me and for anyone who finds himself having to do such a daily operation as crossing while blind and therefore with a series of difficulties more than other pedestrians. It is a source of great concern because unfortunately it happens too often. It happened to me a few months ago in via Marconi. On that occasion my dog Perla was also there with some acquaintances. The car broke my stick and continued even risking hitting my dog. I was going to the municipality so I immediately alerted the local police who tracked down the driver. I also reported this episode in via Mazzini. I believe it is important above all to combat the frequent number of incidents of this type in the city. It cannot be normal not to stop to facilitate passage on the crossing or not to stop after having grazed a person and broken his stick.”
In recent years, Rosafio has been the promoter of various awareness initiatives in the city but also of national campaigns to talk about his experience and his difficulties: “It is important that motorists remember that there are people on the road who also have additional difficulties and that have respect and attention. From this point of view, design can also do a lot: raised pedestrian walkways are very important and precious for the mobility of the blind, like all the flooring measures.”
