Asturian Representation Shines in Spanish U-23 Badminton Championship

Five medals, two silver and three bronze, were the haul that the Asturian representation achieved in the Spanish U-23 Badminton Championship that concluded yesterday at the La Tejerona pavilion in Gijón.

Jana Villanueva was the most outstanding athlete from the region, with two second places, both in doubles. One of them was obtained by her together with Amaia Torralba, her partner in Badminton Oviedo, in the women’s doubles. The potential of Nikol Carulla and Elena Lorenzo was unapproachable in the final. In addition, Villanueva also won silver in mixed doubles with Marcos García, losing in the final to Joan Monroy and Elena Lorenzo.

In addition, Asturias achieved three bronzes in the competitive event in Gijón. Laura Álvarez took it individually, and also in pairs forming the mixed doubles with Ruth Veiguela. The passage to the final was closed by her teammates Jana Villanueva and Amaia Torralba. Finally, the men’s doubles composed of Marcos García and Vicente Gázquez also made the podium.

Apart from the aforementioned Nikol Carulla and Elena Lorenzo, winners in women’s doubles, the other winners of the National under-23 La Tejerona were Marc Cardona and Nikol Carulla herself in singles, the Marc Cardona-Rodrigo Sanjurjo couple in men’s doubles and Joan Monroy and Elena Lorenzo in mixed doubles.

The next notable event on the calendar for Asturian badminton players is the Spanish U-13 Championship in Oviedo and the regional national team championship in Villanueva de la Vera, in Cáceres, scheduled for December 15 and 17 respectively.
