Addressing the Equality of Prize Money in Tennis: Insights from Coach Bastien Fazincani

Bastien Fazincani was our consultant to put together the file ” Where are the women “ of our We Love Tennis Magazine, last issue of 2023. The French coach of the Hungarian Panna Udvardy therefore addressed the subject of the famous equality of prize money.

Is the fight for equal prize money a necessary step?
Of course it’s an obligation. There is one thing that we almost never talk about and which is implacably logical, and that is the amount of expenses compared to the prize money. Outside of Grand Slam tournaments, women are paid almost half as much while their fees are the same as boys. Their plane tickets cost the same, their hotel rooms and meals too. They also have to pay their staff, so at the end of the year, why would expenses represent 30% of a player’s turnover compared to 50–60% for a female player? If we pay the players less, we would also have to make them spend less to balance things out. Do a circuit that is played in Spain all year round for example [rires]. The costs of transport, accommodation, etc., everything would be divided by two or three, and the current earnings would therefore be sufficient.
