Borussia Dortmund Makes Personnel Decisions Ahead of Champions League Final and Next Season

Borussia Dortmund is looking forward to the Champions League final, but is also already looking ahead to the coming season – and any personnel issues. Two further expiring contracts will not be renewed.

The time of intensive transfer talks is approaching: Sebastian Kehl. IMAGO/Steinbrenner

It is known that Marco Reus will be leaving BVB, and sports director Sebastian Kehl has now confirmed that the expiring contracts of Mateu Morey and Marius Wolf will not be extended. “We have informed Mateu Morey and Marius Wolf that we will not be extending their contracts,” said Kehl in an interview with the Ruhr News and regretted how things went for the Spaniard, who only managed 32 competitive games in four years. “He was very unlucky with injuries and was never able to show what he was capable of over a longer period of time.”

With Wolf, on the other hand, he referred to his moving career. “Marius had different phases, was a national player at times, made five international appearances as a BVB professional,” Kehl looked back and revealed that the offensive player was now “also excited by the possibility of perhaps gaining new experience abroad.” Kehl did not give any information about what will happen next for the two, but he confirmed that both will be said goodbye on Saturday against Darmstadt (LIVE! from 3:30 p.m. on kicker), as will Otto Addo, who will lead Ghana to the World Cup as national coach.

Klopp, Streich – and also Tuchel! Time to say goodbye!

The situation is completely different for Ian Maatsen (on loan from Chelsea) and Jadon Sancho (on loan from Manchester United). Kehl confirmed, “that we will of course have discussions” – and emphasized: “We will have to convince, and that will not be easy for economic reasons, because their respective clubs hold the steering wheel.”

We will first push ahead with our squad planning before we solve problems at other clubs.

Kehl also commented on the loanees Giovanni Reyna (Nottingham Forest), Soumaila Coulibaly (Royal Antwerp) and Tom Rothe. “Everyone has valid contracts with us from July 1st. We are analyzing the situation together with the advisors and the players: What makes sense? Another loan, a return or a sale? We’ll take a look at it calmly,” he said .

Had a strong season in Kiel: Tom Rothe. IMAGO/Eibner

The 44-year-old then explicitly praised the development of the 19-year-old Rothe, who is said to have appeared on the radar of other clubs. “He was promoted to the Bundesliga with Kiel and played almost all the games. It’s understandable that there’s movement there. And he plays in a position that arouses desire. We’re thinking about how we’ll deal with it. We will first advance our squad planning before we solve problems at other clubs.”

Optimism before the Champions League final

The 314-time Bundesliga player also said that BVB’s focus was currently on something completely different – the Champions League. On June 1st at Wembley they want to win the handle pot for the second time after 1997. It certainly won’t be easy, Kehl knows, after all, their opponents Real Madrid are the “clear favorites”, but “we definitely have a chance” – and their own fans as a bargaining chip. “London will be black and yellow this weekend,” Kehl is certain.

“I believe that we can handle this,” says Kehl optimistically with a view to the CL final. And the Dortmunders don’t lack self-confidence, after all they overcame teams like Paris St. Germain, Newcastle United, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven and Atletico Madrid on the way to the final and have already left a mark. That brings us the highest level of sporting recognition. ”
