The course of the game:
At VfB there were three changes to the starting lineup compared to the away game in Heidenheim: Maxi Mittelstädt, Enzo Millot and Jamie Leweling started for Anthony Rouault, Wooyeong Jeong and Silas. The team with the chest ring went into the game confidently, dominated the game and had a great chance to take the lead in the eleventh minute. After former VfB and current Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel fouled Deniz Undav, Chris Führich took the penalty. But his shot was missed by Gregor Kobel.
However, the missed penalty did not dampen the white and red offensive drive. On the contrary: VfB earned chance after chance. Deniz Undav and Enzo Millot had a double chance in the 20th minute, Jamie Leweling scored in a promising position in the 23rd and 31st. But they all failed due to the outstanding Kobel. Defensively, the team with the red chest ring did not allow a single shot on goal by the opponent until the 36th minute. Accordingly, Dortmund surprisingly took the lead with their first dangerous goal through Niclas Füllkrug (see “The Goals”). However, VfB hit back through Deniz Undav before the break and got back into the game. In stoppage time, Enzo Millot had a good chance to make it 2-1 with a header, but like his teammates before, he was denied by Gregor Kobel. So it went into the break with the score 1-1 after a first half in which VfB was clearly the team that dominated the game – as can be seen, among other things, from a goal-scoring statistic of 16-2.
Good start to the second half and a good end
VfB also started the second half with a lot of speed and a very good chance to score. Chris Führich pushed the ball just past the far post from a half-left position (53′). The Dortmund team continued to have few offensive actions, but they were always dangerous with their rare attacks. Marcel Sabitzer hit the post in the 62nd minute.
During the second half of the game, two recently injured players, Josha Vagnoman and Serhou Guirassy, returned to action. It was the latter who scored the winning goal and gave his team a well-deserved home win, even if the second half was much more balanced and competitive.

36th minute: Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson serves Niclas Füllkrug with a flat cross from the right side, who only has to push it in at the far post to make it 1-0.
42nd minute: Jamie Leweling gets through to a long ball from Hiroki Ito in the half-right position in the penalty area and lays the ball off for Deniz Undav, who pushes in to make it 1-1.
83rd minute: After a foul by Gregor Kobel on Silas, Serhou Guirassy takes the penalty and converts it safely to 2-1.

The handling of the missed penalty and the goal conceded was top notch. It was important for us to equalize before the break. With the 1:1 we were rewarded for our effort. In the second half the game was no longer so clear. We had phases that we had to overcome and prevent in the form of counterattacks. Praise also goes to the guys on defense. We defended the situations well and missed making it 2-1 a little earlier, but we stuck with it. That makes me proud. The team’s reaction was outstanding. We wanted to push ourselves to the limit, and we succeeded. Ideally, we wanted to achieve a good result – and we succeeded in that too. We are happy about that.”
Edin Terzic, head coach Borussia Dortmund: “Congratulations to Stuttgart on their victory and their performance. VfB deserved to win. We missed a lot in the first half. Apart from Gregor Kobel’s performance and the result, nothing went right in the first half. We discussed things during the break and wanted to improve them. After the change of sides it got a little bit better, but still not good. Apart from Marcel Sabitzer hitting the post, I can’t remember any dangerous attack. It’s a deserved defeat and a disappointing day for us.”
Deniz Undav: “It’s crazy. The fans pushed us to this victory. We should have decided the game earlier. The course of the game also shows what mentality our team has. The boys fought very well.”

For Josha Vagnoman, his substitution against Dortmund was synonymous with his first appearance of the season.
