Tuchel’s Tactical Message: A Reason for Bayern’s Cup Disgrace

Was THAT also a reason for Bayern’s cup disgrace in Saarbrücken?

Ex-national player and TV expert Mehmet Scholl (53) expressed explosive suspicions about Munich’s line-up in the embarrassing 2-1 defeat at the third division club last week.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel (50) left top scorer Harry Kane (30) out for 90 minutes and other key players such as Jamal Musiala (20), Kingsley Coman (27) and Serge Gnabry (28) only for the last half hour of the game. The starting line-up included right-back backup Buona Sarr (31) and talent Frans Krätzig (20).

Scholl assumes that Tuchel wanted to prove to his bosses that his team as a whole was not good enough. In the Sky program “Triple – the Schüttflix football talk” he said about the Bayern coach: “He saw in training that there was still something to do behind the best twelve or thirteen players. He brought the second suit, which doesn’t even beat Saarbrücken. So how are these players supposed to help win the Champions League?”

In recent weeks and months, Tuchel has repeatedly complained about the lack of breadth in the record champions’ squad and called for reinforcements.

Scholl does not believe that Tuchel expected a defeat and deliberately took it into account. But: “Tuchel didn’t sacrifice the game on purpose, but he didn’t unconsciously use this game to say: ‘Guys, I told you before, look at it and then you can react.’ We are at that point now.”

Scholl continued: “I assume that Tuchel expected a narrow victory. Now the worst case scenario has occurred. I think Tuchel didn’t expect that, nobody expected that it wouldn’t even be enough for this game.”

When BILD asked whether he had used the cup game to show the bosses how thin the squad is, Thomas Tuchel explained at the Bayern-PK on Friday: “That’s absolute nonsense! We used the cup game to rest a few players, which is what we did in the first round. And to spread the burden. And to give players a chance who simply deserved the chance. Unfortunately we lost the game, so of course the responsibility falls on me. It’s always with me for setup. But that had nothing to do with it.”
