Top Performances and MVPs from Week 2 of High School Football Playoffs in South Jersey

Week 2 of the high school football playoffs is in the books and 15 South Jersey programs punched their ticket to sectional finals.

In addition, three Non-Public squads advanced to the next round of their brackets.

Top Performances Week 2 of Playoffs

Dominic Barr, Glassboro. Barr ran 21 times for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns as the third-seeded Bulldogs blanked second-seeded Hunterdon Central 20-0 in the Central Jersey Group 1 semifinals on Friday.

Lamar Best, Willingboro. Best set the school’s all-time record for passing touchdowns as the second-seeded Chimeras bested No. 3 Pleasantville 57-29 in the Central 2 semifinals on Friday. He was 14-of-19 for 239 yards, 4 TDs and an interception, and had 9 carries for 66 yards and a score. Best is up to 56 career touchdown passes, breaking the old mark of 54, which was set by Ah-Shaun Davis in 2020, per South Jersey historian Chuck Langerman. Best is also just the sixth sophomore in South Jersey history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season. He’s at 2,209 so far this year.

Lotzeir Brooks, Millville. Brooks had 8 catches for a career-high 202 yards and 3 touchdowns as the top-seeded Thunderbolts handled No. 5 Shawnee 41-7 in the South 4 semifinals on Friday. Brooks moved into second place on South Jersey’s all-time receiving list with 3,109 career yards, per Langerman, moving ahead of Holy Cross’ Isaac Irby (3,088; 1999). He needs 156 to surpass Cedar Creek’s JoJo Bermudez (3,264, 2021) for No. 1 on the list.

Murad Campfield, Cherokee. Campfield ran 26 times for a career-best 195 yards and scored three total touchdowns as top-seeded Cherokee defeated No. 5 Kingsway 28-21 in the South 5 semifinals on Friday. Campfield had a pair of rushing scores and took the second-half kickoff 99 yards to pay dirt, which gave the orange and white a two-score advantage.

Ty Costabile, Holy Spirit. Costabile was 15-of-26 passing for 264 yards, 4 touchdowns and an interception, including a game-winning 20-yard score to Matthew Abbott with 11 seconds remaining, as the fourth-seeded Spartans bested No. 5 Immaculata 36-33 in the first round of the Non-Public B playoffs on Friday.

Jayden Johnson, Woodbury. Johnson was 8-of-10 for 189 yards and 3 TDs and ran for a score too as the third-seeded Thundering Herd stormed past No. 7 Burlington City 57-0 in the South 1 semifinals on Saturday. In the last three weeks, Johnson is 26-of-41 for 625 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Back in the final: Strengthened by adversity, Woodbury football is back in a familiar spot

Eric Lee, Camden. Lee had four tackles and a pair of interceptions as the third-seeded Panthers bested No. 2 Holmdel 21-7 in the Central 3 semifinals on Friday.

Cam Miller, Winslow. Miller set the school’s single-season receiving yards record as the top-seeded Eagles beat No. 4 Hammonton 33-6 in the Central 4 semifinals on Friday. Miller had 3 catches for 185 yards, including 65- and 80-yard touchdown grabs. He now has 1,182 yards for the year, besting the old mark of 1,078, set by Isaiah Shaw in 2017, per Langerman. He needs 129 yards to break the career record of 2,143, set by DeVante Waugh in 2010.

Matt Morad, Paul VI. Morad set career-highs with 32 carries for 336 yards and 5 touchdowns as the eighth-seeded Eagles took down No. 9 Notre Dame 51-41 in the opening round of the Non-Public A playoffs on Friday.

Alim Parks, Cedar Creek. Parks had 8 receptions for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns as the fourth-seeded Pirates upset top-seeded and previously unbeaten Timber Creek 32-21 in the Central 3 semifinals on Friday. He also had 7 tackles, 1 for loss, and a sack on defense.

Logan Perez, Washington Twp. Perez hauled in 8 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown as the second-seeded Minutemen earned a 19-7 win over No. 3 Rancocas Valley in the Central 5 semifinals on Friday. He also had a pair of pass breakups on defense.

Patrick Ryan, Haddonfield. Ryan made 15 tackles and snagged a pair of picks as the second-seeded Haddons defeated No. 3 Gloucester 17-7 in the South 2 quarterfinals on Friday. He added 2 catches for 24 yards on offense.

Kenai Simmons, Schalick. Simmons had a 63-yard scramble for a touchdown with 1:20 left in regulation to lift the top-seeded Cougars over No. 4 Shore 16-14 in the Central 1 semifinals on Friday. Simmons finished 9-of-15 passing for 122 yards, a TD and an interception, and added 13 carries for 105 yards, including the game-winning score.

Julian Turney, St. Augustine. Turney ran 23 times for 196 yards and 4 TDs to lift the fifth-seeded Hermits to a 35-14 triumph over No. 12 St. Peter’s Prep in the first round of the Non-Public A tournament on Friday.

Jamie Tyson, Mainland. Tyson set the school’s single-season record for interceptions as the second-seeded Mustangs dispatched No. 3 Colts Neck 49-7 in the South 4 semifinals on Friday. Tyson had an 83-yard pick-6 in the first quarter for his eighth interception of the campaign. He also had 2 catches for 41 yards, both of which he scored on.

Colin Walsh, Seneca. Walsh had a sack and five tackles for loss as the third-seeded Golden Eagles downed No. 7 Highland 21-6 in the South 3 semifinals on Saturday.

Max Webb, Woodstown. Webb was 6-of-8 for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran 11 times for 66 yards and another score as the top-seeded Wolverines beat No. 5 Penns Grove 34-14 in the South 1 semifinals on Friday.

Xavier Wyatt, Delsea. Wyatt had a pair of touchdown runs as the top-seeded Crusaders took care of No. 4 Manasaquan 43-7 in the South 3 semifinals on Friday. He had 4 carries for 68 yards and had a tackle on defense.
