Top High School Football Showdown: No. 5 Frederick Douglass vs. No. 1 Male in KHSAA Class 6A Playoff Game

Tonight is the first meeting between the top public-school program in Lexington and the top public-school program in Louisville.

No. 5 Frederick Douglass (7-4) is set to square off against No. 1 Male (11-1) in a KHSAA Class 6A third-round playoff game.

Our Jason Frakes is at Male High School for the game, which kicked off at 7 p.m. Be sure to follow Frakes all night for updates from that game and others.

Frederick Douglass is in its first season of Class 6A football after winning the Class 5A state title last year. The Broncos crushed Madison Central, 50-7, last Friday as sophomore TayTay Allen rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bulldogs were slow out of the gate but ultimately pulled away for a 34-14 victory over Fern Creek last Friday. Senior Shammai Gates rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Male’s defense ranks No. 1 in Class 6A and No. 6 statewide, allowing 10.2 points per game.

Other big games Friday night involving Louisville-area teams include a clash between McCracken County (6-6) at Trinity (9-3), Central Hardin (7-5) at Ballard (9-3), Ludlow (8-4) at Kentucky Country Day (10-2) and Central (7-5) at Christian Academy (11-1).
