The resizing of Sporting with El Molinón has been so great that the latest cut in the cost of the work to keep the World Cup flame alive is even greater than the project that the Orlegi Group now proposes to the Gijón City Council and the Principality: the club rojiblanco has slimmed down its plan by no less than 180 million (it came to estimating the operation at a maximum of 330 just a few weeks ago) until now putting it at a maximum of 150, regardless of whether the work is complete by building a new stadium from scratch. red and white – preserving its location – or a comprehensive reform.
While these two avenues remain open, with neither seeming better placed than the other today, the main battlehorse continues to be how to raise those 150 million. To solve this great enigma, Sporting has different options on the table, in a very embryonic phase, after learning from the Higher Sports Council that the Central Government will not allocate a single euro to the creation of new stadiums.
The first is through consensus with the institutions seeking that both the Consistory and the Principality enter. The club has been holding talks with both administrations for some time. The Gijón City Council has already expressed on countless occasions in the public and private spheres that its muscle is limited and that it will not make a relevant effort. Conversations have taken place and will continue to take place with the regional government to address this matter. These weeks there could be new meetings. Another would be with the participation of private companies that see the renovated – or new – El Molinón as a business opportunity. David Guerra, executive president of the club, is the one who is maintaining negotiations with some interested firms. The company “Legends” in this sense will be in charge of obtaining the maximum economic performance in the stadium. “Legends”, a highly respected firm, has been working with Athletic for some time with Nuevo San Mamés. There is another route, pending final development, that would be more linked to the surroundings of the municipal field.
The owners of Sporting have always believed that the possibilities that the field has if it becomes an elite stadium like San Mamés is now are very important, so its surroundings would acquire enormous value. The team of architects led from Mexican soil by Fernando Sordo Madaleno has spent months of a lot of field work trying to propose new initiatives, which today are yet to be polished but will be more developed in a matter of weeks. At the time, the creation of two towers on land that had been purchased by Mercadona was proposed, although, as LA NUEVA ESPAÑA reported, with the project’s sales, that idea was put aside. The project promoters continue to envision the creation of new properties around the stadium as a way to finance the project. It is an embryonic option within the different ways to finance the millionaire plan. Asked about this, municipal sources limit themselves to insisting that “we want Gijón to be in the World Cup and we are working in coordination with the club to achieve it.”
Another problem that the new project would pose, if a reform is finally advocated, lies in the difficulty that the team would have to compete in El Molinón while the work is being carried out. It is not a minor issue, because the entity has always estimated that the path of reform would be the most harmful to reconcile the needs of the team as a local team with those of an operation of that magnitude. Sordo Madaleno’s team estimated that this damage would leave Sporting without the possibility of playing at home for about two years, unless the work is expedited. This would force the team to look for another field for a long time. Although the club is not yet in those keys.
