The European Open: The Future of Professional Tennis Moves to Hamburg’s City Park

As of: November 12, 2023 12:26 p.m

The European Open for professional tennis players is moving. The traditional WTA tournament in Hamburg will no longer be held at Rothenbaum next year in the time window from July 15th to 26th, but in the city park.

As the organizer agency MatchMaker announced on Sunday, a temporary center court for 2,000 spectators will then be built there. “We are in the middle of the countryside and the stars will be able to be seen up close like no other tournament in the world. I’m looking forward to an incredibly family atmosphere,” said tournament director Sandra Reichel. According to MatchMaker, the stadium on the THC von Horn and Hamm facility has a “charming boutique character”.

Andrea Petkovic sees the Hamburg event as “the perfect preparation for the Olympics. We play on sand like in Paris, here the players can relax again in a real idyll, and the distance to Paris is short,” explained the tournament ambassador.

Two organizers will be operating in Hamburg next year. The combined women’s and men’s tennis tournament is about to end. more

The move is necessary due to a change in organizer for the men’s tournament

The background to the move of the women’s tournament, which was first held in 1896, is a change at the organizer level. Until 2023, the Reichel family was responsible for both the higher-class ATP 500 men’s tournament and the women’s WTA 250 tournament with MatchMaker in Hamburg. Both tournaments have so far been held at Rothenbaum. For men, the German Tennis Federation (DTB) will initially work with the international sports agency Tennium for five years from 2024, which will host the ATP tournament for the first time at Rothenbaum from July 15th.

Responsibility for the women’s tournament remained with MatchMaker. The fact that two organizers share a date for two tournaments at one location was already considered very questionable.
