Red Sox would be interested in Gleyber Torres

The Boston Red Sox and their new president of baseball operations, Craig Breslow, would be looking to strengthen the middle part of the infield. And apparently they have set their sights on Venezuelan Gleyber Torres, to occupy second base. That is, they would seek to do business with the New York Yankees, their biggest rivals in the Eastern division.

According to a report by WEEI’s Rob Bradford, the Red Sox have identified the Venezuelan as a target. Bradford reported that the Red Sox have been interested in the Caracas native since the 2023 Trade Deadline. And both parties could resume talks this offseason.

It should be noted that the Venezuelan, who is entering his last year of control before being able to declare free agency, has been with the Yankees since he was acquired in the trade that involved Cuban Aroldis Chapman in 2016.

Torres, a two-time All-Star, has a career OPS+ of 118 with 123 home runs over six seasons. The Venezuelan has hit at least 24 homers in each of the last two seasons and four times in his career.

One player to be sent to New York in the possible trade is Alex Verdugo. Bradford reported that the patrolman raises the interest of the Yankees.

It makes sense, given what Bombers general manager Brian Cashman said recently that the club was looking for two outfielders, preferably left-handed hitters. Like Torres, Verdugo will be entering his final year under contractual control before entering the free market.

Verdugo has an OPS+ of 105 and 57 home runs in his career.
