There are few tennis players who aspire to be professionals and who do not know the Cultural de Sanxenxo. In recent years, this society has been weaving a sports network that makes it an international reference. The ITF junior J300, the highest echelon of the non-professional circuit, is its spearhead. Along its tracks have passed, among others, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Rudd or Martín Landaluce. This year we had three tennis players who are in the international top 20, it is something very complicated and especially after the US Open is held because many have already gotten the points, explains the manager of the Sanxenxo CCD, Antón Hernandez.

Climatology has made this edition the most complex since they began organizing it 21 years ago. Even so, it came out ahead thanks in part to the fact that logistics worked to be able to move the athletes to the courts of the Mercantil Casino of Pontevedra. This infrastructure contributes to the Cultural’s figures surprising even its organizers. Nearly 1,500 players applied to participate in one of the tournaments that were held throughout the year: the ITF junior and cadet, the International Master Tour Tournament and the M25, the only professional tournament, in which 25,000 euros in prizes were distributed.

These numbers that Antón Hernández and the president of the CCD Sanxenxo, Paco Hernández, are considering, are, in their words, a driving force for the local economy. There are 751 overnight stays through the club, but there are also parents or coaches who come on their own, explain the organizers, who this year had to extend the stay of the competitors due to bad weather.

With these four tournaments already consolidated, Paco Hernández looks even higher and thinks about being able to one day bring a Challenger, which will mean distributing 50,000 euros in prizes and will put the CCD on the professional circuit. With almost 200 paddle tennis licenses and more than 150 tennis licenses, the facilities are beginning to become small for the level of sports in which the Cultural operates. At the moment, they have acquired some adjacent land to be able to expand the slopes, but their current location does not allow them much expansion. We have made a proposal to the Council for the special infrastructure plan that helps relaunch sport in Sanxenxo, explained Paco Hernndez, this Thursday at an informative breakfast.
