The Case of the Former Teacher Accused of Aggravated Injuries: A Mother’s Stance and the Disputed Compensation Proposal

One of the children accepted the compensation proposal and withdrew the civil action. The other, however – the one who suffered the most serious injuries – refused the agreement. Because “our health and dignity and that of my son cannot be bought” stigmatized the mother of one of them, in the courtroom with her son. Yesterday in court there was also Alberto Poli, a 59-year-old former teacher of a professional institute in the province on trial for aggravated injuries (due to the minor age of the victims and the use of a weapon). The defense requested probation for him, an institution that would guarantee the accused the suspension of the trial. The civil party opposed the request, considering it “late” and inconsistent with such serious facts, while the judge, Giovanni Pagliuca, took his time to decide.

The episode dates back to the evening of February 14, 2021, Carnival. Two students, fourteen at the time, pupils of the school where the teacher worked, started throwing firecrackers into the street. A stunt. Some firecrackers ended up in the garden of the building where the teacher lives with his family. Having spotted the perpetrators of the prank from the window, he flew into a rage. The versions of the evening’s epilogue, however, differ. According to the accusation, Poli – later fired – came down armed with a baseball bat and chased the kids. He took the car to look for them. He found them in a carpentry shop and after hunting them down he beat them up. “Enough, enough professor”, they would have implored him. “Nothing is enough, I have to kill you and leave you like dogs”, is his response put in black and white in the investigation documents. One suffered wounds that healed in three weeks. The friend, a gash on the head treated with over twenty stitches, injuries to the hands, wrist and shoulders, as well as post traumatic stress syndrome and a 40 day prognosis.

He, the former teacher, denies having gone out armed, claims to have lost his mind only after hearing the boys threaten to set fire to his house and to have hit them with a stick found in the carpentry shop because he was “scared”. He said he was “sorry” for the disproportionate reaction and apologized to the families of the young people, represented by the lawyers Marino Colosio and Francesca Scagliola. One of the boys, it was said, accepted the defendant’s compensation and withdrew from the proceedings. The other, however, rejected the proposal and is still a civil party. On January 18th it will be known whether the professor will be able to access the test or whether the hearing will begin for him.
