Stefanos Tsitsipas Confident and Healthy Despite ATP Finals Debut Defeat

Stefanos Tsitsipas arrived with many doubts about his physique to his debut at the 2023 ATP Finals against Jannik Sinner. Once at a press conference after the Greek’s defeat, the world number 6 confidently says that he has no discomfort.

– Praise for Sinner

“First of all, I would like to congratulate Jannik on a great match, great performance from start to finish. He has shown his strength, very responsible at all times. He has attacked a lot, served very well and maintained his composure in crucial moments. He could have been better on my part, but happy to continue in this tournament.

Now I have two more games, I hope they go as well as possible, that I can stay here until the last day. That’s the beauty of the ATP Finals, it’s not over until it’s over. You can always come back, it’s a good format, it allows for great competition and those comebacks that we don’t see in our sport.”

– Do you have any discomfort in your back or elbow?

“No, not that I know of. I am completely fine and prepared to play this tournament. Turin is one of the most important events of the year for me. “I am healthy, ready to compete,” the Greek explained to the media.

– Good feelings from the European indoor tour

“I enjoy playing on fast surfaces much more than I did years ago. I think my tennis adapts better to slow surfaces, I can hit big shots. My one-handed backhand can be a surprise element against my rivals because they think it is my weak point. I’ve worked a lot on it. My confidence has increased in these last two weeks, I feel like I am solid in that part.

It all has to do with footwork and my preparation. My game is quite complete. I can play both sides. I can also upload to the network, something that is not seen as much today. That element of my tennis, the ability to go up to the net and play much more open and creative has made me have more success on fast surfaces on the indoor tour. My confidence grows with every match I play, I am able to understand my tennis much better. “It’s very aggressive, maybe risky, but one good day I can do a lot of damage.”

– What do you have to improve after today’s defeat?

“It’s very simple: play better tennis. Specifically, my games to the rest. Press more, subtract deeper, so that when a short ball comes to me, I can go up to the net. I see this tournament as an opportunity to grow my game through greater risks. Why not? At the same time, I want to try to do the things where I think I can achieve a high level or excellence when I approach my tennis with that mentality.”
