After the afternoon session, Jannik Sinner was able to approach his third group match against Holger Rune in a somewhat relaxed manner: Due to Novak Djokovic’s loss of a set against Hubert Hurkacz, the Italian had already been confirmed as a semi-finalist in the ATP Finals before the start of the game. The decision about second place in the semi-finals was made in a long-distance duel between Rune and Djokovic.

With a win against Sinner, Rune could have taken the exceptional Serbian talent out of the tournament and even finished the green group in first place. But the Dane got off to a false start and quickly found himself 4-0 down. After about half an hour of play, Sinner brought the first set to a close.

The second round was much more balanced, Rune managed the decisive break in the twelfth game to equalize the set. Sinner, who was clearly struggling with problems in his lower back at this point, didn’t give up after losing the set and created break opportunities in both the third and fifth games of the third period.

However, Sinner did not take advantage of this and had to fend off a break chance when the score was 3:4. The South Tyrolean did this with a strong second serve and shortly afterwards took Rune’s service game. The fourth-placed player in the world rankings didn’t have any major problems when it came to being eliminated: after around 2:30 hours of play, Sinner secured the 6:2, 5:7 and 6:4 success.

While Rune’s season is now over, Sinner and Djokovic are in the semi-finals. The opponents of the two have not yet been determined: In addition to Danill Medvedev, who has already qualified, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev from the red group also have a chance of moving into the semi-finals.
