Remembering Karl Karner: A Pioneer of Judo in Burgenland

The former president of the Burgenland Judo Association Karl Karner died on Thursday at the age of 82. The qualified sports teacher and long-time trainer has significantly developed and shaped the sport of judo in Burgenland.

The qualified sports teacher from Oberwart has dedicated himself to judo all his life and was significantly involved in the founding of the Burgenland Judo Association in 1976. In addition to his professional work as a sports teacher at the secondary school (now middle school) in Oberwart, he also worked as a trainer and training officer for the Austrian Judo Association and has been committed to trainer training for decades.

President for twelve years

As a junior national coach, he was able to achieve three Junior European Championship titles with his athletes between 1970 and 1979. The Oberwart Judo Club, founded in 1964, was a matter close to his heart. Until shortly before his 80th birthday, he continued to stand on the mat every week and pass on his knowledge and passion to children and judo enthusiasts. He demonstrated his affinity for all sports as a long-standing top official at ASVÖ Burgenland.

Judo Austria Karl Karner developed the sport of judo in Burgenland

Karner headed the Burgenland regional association from 1983 to 1995. After his active presidency, he was appointed honorary president. “With Karl Karner, judo sport in Burgenland has lost a pioneer from the very beginning. I learned judo from him and was also allowed to take over the Oberwart Judo Club from him. The Burgenland Judo Association will always have fond memories of Karl Karner. I would like to express our deep condolences to the bereaved family,” said the President of the Austrian Judo Association, Roland Poiger, in a press release.
