Polish Tennis Player Iga Swiatek Dominates WTA Finals, Reclaims Top Ranking

The Polish tennis player defeated Jessica Pegula (WTA No. 5) from the USA 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

The 22-year-old Svyontek won all five matches at the WTA Finals, did not lose a single set and allowed her opponents to win only 20 games, which is a new tournament record since the introduction of the group play format in 2003.

This season Svyontek won 68 of 79 matches and won six titles, including the French Open.

The success allowed the Polish woman to return to the first place in the WTA ranking, ahead of the independent athlete Arina Sabalenka, who became the first racket after winning the US Open Championship in September.

On Monday, Pegula could become the first tennis player in history to win four of the world’s best female tennis players in one tournament. In the group stage, the American beat the leader of the ranking at that time, Sabalenka, and the WTA fourth number Yelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, but in the semifinals she dealt with her compatriot and doubles partner Koko Goff (WTA No. 3).

Meanwhile, Svyontek beat Onsa Jaber (WTA 7th), Goff and the Czech Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 6th) in the subgroup, but in the semi-finals she dealt with the world number one Sabalenka.

The winners of the tournament in doubles were the German Laura Siegemunde and the neutral athlete Vera Zvonarjova, who beat American Nicole Melikar-Martinez and Ellen Peres from Australia 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
