Lionel Messi could go to European top club: ‘We gave up after ten days’

Lionel Messi was given the opportunity to sign for AC Milan two years ago. Paolo Maldini announced this in the PoretCast program. His arrival ultimately proved impossible despite frantic efforts.
Messi announced in mid-2021 that he would leave FC Barcelona. At that time it was still unknown where the Argentinian would sign. Messi would eventually sign for Paris Saint-Germain, where he did not have a happy phase in his career.
Before signing for Les Parisiens, Messi also had the option to choose Milan. “For ten days we tried to bring Messi to Milan,” reveals Maldini, then the technical director of I Rossoneri. “After that we gave up.”
“It’s too late now, but a player like Messi is a spectacle for everyone to see. When I read that he might leave for Internazionale, I got scared!”, says Maldini with a wink. So it wasn’t Inter, but PSG.
There were some exciting weeks before that. Barcelona was no longer able to keep club icon Messi financially. After an unclear period with several rumors surrounding his person, he eventually signed for PSG. Messi had a difficult relationship with the fans and left the club for Inter Miami last summer.
Maldini was Milan’s technical director when Messi’s future was uncertain in 2021. Maldini brought Rafael Leão to the club, among others. In June of this year, the Italian was suddenly thrown out. The 55-year-old Maldini does not yet know what lies ahead for him in the future. “In fact, I am currently retired. At least I have been since last summer.”

Maldini also made a striking statement about Internazionale. The Milan club icon is asked which club he believes will win the title at the end of the season. “Inter have already won the championship.” Leader Inter is only two points ahead of Juventus after twelve rounds. Milan is third, eight points behind its fellow city rivals.
