He just didn’t feel the joy of wanting to come back from the injury. This is otherwise “like a key to success. Unfortunately, I had a lot of injuries, but I always found it a challenge to come back and have the feeling ‘Now I’ve made an effort’.”
“And I didn’t feel that,” Berrettini now admitted. This season, the former top ten player only played 27 games.
He really had to fight afterwards, said the 27-year-old: “I was on the ground. Mentally I wasn’t ready to face the challenge.”

Matteo Berrettini has his sights set on a comeback goal again
It was therefore important to “stop, think a little and take my time. Because body and head belong together.” Berrettini now also has a comeback goal in mind: “Hopefully I’ll get started in Australia. My goal is to play as many games as possible next year.”
He has “great memories of Australia, and it’s a part of the tour that I always enjoy playing on. That’s the goal,” said the current number 90 in the world rankings: “It’s doable. So I’m working hard for it.”
Berrettini was also able to gain an important insight from this mentally difficult time: “The support was always there, especially from the people who care about me, who were with me and are with me. (…) I know “Who I am, I know what I’ve achieved in my career, I know what I want to do, I know what makes me happy.”
The 27-year-old is currently supporting his compatriots as a spectator at the Davis Cup in Málaga, where Italy will meet Serbia in the semi-finals.
