It was a particularly serene Stéphane Eberlin who presented himself at a press conference, this Friday, May 17, 2024, a few minutes after the success of his Caen Basket Calvados team against Tours (87-71). He will wait for the name of his future opponent in the semi-final, Rueil or Mulhouse, while going for a walk at the beach!

The reaction of the Caen BC coach:

Stéphane Eberlin: “We approached the match very well, with a lot of intensity, and skill too. The end of the second half, where they returned to -20, gave them hope. They came back to 7 points but we remained solid and finished at +16. The most important thing is the qualification. If I had been told before the quarter that we would go through two matches, I would have signed straight away. Above all, we must remember the qualification. Yann (Siegwarth) was clearly an offensive leader tonight. He had a slump in the second phase but he has regained skill since his return from injury.

Personally, I wasn’t nervous but I saw some people get nervous. You had to keep calm. We have significant confidence today, even more so at home. I didn’t sense a team in distress as Tours got closer.
I have no preference between Mulhouse and Rueil for the semi-final, it will inevitably be a big team. Both teams have real qualities, it will be a big fight. Especially since they will have nothing to lose since they do not have the announced objective of going up.

We’ve had the pressure since the start of the season, since we announced the objective of the climb. The trap will be to believe that… We will have to play big matches. If we lose the first match, the pressure will be reversed.”

Cédric Heitz, Tours coach:

“It’s a match that could sum up our season. We were able to start the matches badly, but each time, we were able to turn things around in the second half. Sometimes it was enough, sometimes not. It’s been a problem all season. In the first round, against Pont-de-Cheruy, we were at the level required for the playoffs, but against Caen, that was not the case. We tried everything to perform. Whatever the approach, we didn’t start the match well, being 30 points behind is complicated, obviously. Coming back to -7 when we were at -30 is something notable, it proves that no one gave up. It didn’t work, once again… It was a great group with fantastic, talented players, but this lack cost us dearly, especially in the rankings of the first and second phases. »
