Of course, in the absence of Manuel Neuer, who was out for a long time, there was a lot of discussion about the goalkeepers for the national team and who will be between the German posts at the European Championships in their own country. Marc-André ter Stegen is a contender and wants to be number 1. Behind them are Kevin Trapp and Oliver Baumann, who was recently nominated by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. But now Bayern’s captain Neuer is fit again and back on the pitch.
The keeper used the current international break for himself and his personal hygiene so as not to take any risks after the first few games. In the spring, however, the hopes and intentions are that the five-time world goalkeeper would of course like to be part of the German selection again – and of course then play the home tournament in the summer. But it is still unclear whether there will be a duel with Ter Stegen and who Nagelsmann will ultimately choose. If Bayern coach Thomas has his way, this question doesn’t even arise.
Then he will return to his old strength and continue to shape a league of his own in goalkeeping.
“I would like to say something about Manuel Neuer,” the head coach introduces and then emphasizes with a view to the goalkeeper debate in the national goal: “I believe that this question will answer itself in May or June if Manu stays healthy until then in the mental state he is in at the moment. Then he will return to his old strength and continue to shape a league of his own in goalkeeping.”

Until then, the Munich number 1 should concentrate and focus fully on himself. “The basic requirement,” said Tuchel, “is that he remains patient and calm in the here and now, that he can consciously enjoy it as he is doing it right now. He is in a very good harmony – mentally, physically and in the situation, in which he finds himself.”
Good for Bayern, who with Neuer and his representative Sven Ulreich, who will soon extend his contract, which expires in 2024, are now ideally positioned for the end of the year – and the tasks in the New Year. In addition to the Bundesliga and the Champions League at the club, Neuer should also include the European Championship.
“We will also respect that the decision is not ours,” says Tuchel: “But my opinion and the level that Manu can reach is very clear.”
