Increase in Pyrotechnics at Stadiums Raises Concerns for Football Clubs and Authorities

Since fans returned to the stadiums after the end of the Corona restrictions, the flaring of pyrotechnics has increased significantly.

The German Football Association (DFB) has recently repeatedly imposed high fines on the clubs. Most recently, third division team Preußen Münster was asked to pay 106,950 euros. But so far nothing has changed in the picture in the curves.

Ghost games due to pyrotechnics: DFB denies this

Nevertheless: With regard to possible sanctions for fans’ pyrotechnic offenses, the DFB is not planning to reintroduce partial fan exclusions or ghost games. The association confirmed this on Tuesday (November 21, 2023). “Sport Bild” had previously reported on such plans. This claim is “untrue,” according to the DFB.

“It is true that after the pandemic-related spectator restrictions were abolished, pyrotechnic incidents in the stadiums of the first three men’s leagues have increased, in some cases significantly,” the DFB said: “Therefore, the DFB is looking together with the German Football League (DFL) and the clubs for solutions to avoid the dangers associated with the uncontrolled use of pyrotechnics.”

The DFB wants to “continue and intensify this dialogue in the coming weeks and months”.

This was also emphasized by the Vice President Thomas Bergmann, who is responsible for legal affairs. “Of course, the DFB’s top priority is to ensure that no people are harmed in the football stadiums. However, the DFB sports jurisdiction alone could not solve the problem surrounding the dangers posed by the use of pyrotechnics,” said the top official: “Rather, there needs to be a renewed dialogue with everyone involved, such as fan representatives, representatives of the DFL and the clubs, etc “The police should be put in motion to prevent further escalation in the stadiums.”

In 2018, the DFB Presidium launched the guiding principle of so-called “offender-oriented sanctions” with the confirmation of the “Guidelines for the work of the Control Committee”.

“Exclusions of spectators were, are and will always be the last resort for the control committee and the DFB sports jurisdiction,” emphasized the association. (sid)
