Ibiza Shines at Spanish U17 Badminton Championships: Local Athletes Claim Podiums

Ibiza has crowned the new Spanish U17 champions. The first of the three events that are held consecutively at the Sa Blanca Dona sports center on the Balearic island concluded this Sunday with the finals, which had an Ibizan accent on the five podiums. The Pitiusan volantistas have shone, especially Yaidel Gil who achieved a double gold, one of them partnering with Victoria Gutiérrez.

Gil has been proclaimed men’s singles champion by beating Rubén Carreras in a frenetic battle for gold (21-19 and 21-15). The Aragonese Gonzalo Isabal and the Andalusian Mario Rodríguez have also climbed to the podium to take bronze.

Yaidel Gil has once again climbed to the top of the podium by winning the mixed doubles title together with Victoria Gutiérrez, also from Ibiza, after defeating the Andalusian duo of Mario Rodríguez and Rocío Martín in the final. In this test, the third step on the podium has been occupied by the Valencian couple of Quique Gil and Sara Sáez and the Andalusian tandem of Rubén Carreras and Ángela Jiménez.

On the other hand, the women’s individual title has gone to Galicia, after Iziar Barcala put the finishing touch to her great competition with a solid victory over Daniela Corchón (21-8 and 21-12). In this event María García, who is still under-15, has put the Ibizan touch on the podium, as she has won the bronze alongside the Madrid player Polina Prykhodko.

On the other hand, the gender doubles titles have had an Andalusian accent, thanks to the duos of Ángela Jiménez and Rocío Martín and Rubén Carreras and Mario Rodríguez. Jiménez and Martín accounted for Belén Guardiola and Sara Sáez (21-15 and 21-8). María García has once again climbed to the third step in this test, in which she has formed a couple with her sister Sofía. In this case the bronze has been shared with Ana Agua and Alba Moriel from Benalmádena.

In the men’s section, Carreras and Rodríguez have beaten Alejandro Bejar and Pepe Fernández (21-11 and 21-16), with the bronze going to the Ibizans Yulien Gil and Ismael Oballe and the Galicians Xoel Álvarez and Adrián Rodríguez.

The conclusion of the Spanish U17 Championship is at the same time the starting signal for the senior Iberdrola Spanish International, which starts this Monday with more than 250 athletes from all over the world. And for the second consecutive year, in Ibiza badminton is worth for three, since the icing on the cake will be the Spanish International under-15 and under-17 from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 November.
