What a weekend: The Syntainics MBC clipped the wings of the albatrosses in Berlin and won for the first time in the capital city. As a reward, the Weißenfels team moved up to twelfth place. The victory cleared the way for the Niners Chemnitz, who won their game against the Rostock Seawolves with 85:75, scurried past Alba Berlin in the table and are now proudly second.

Historic MBC success in Berlin

Anyone in the Weißenfels basketball community who still had slight doubts was finally convinced on Sunday. The Syntainics MBC has finally found its way to success with its third win of the season in a row. And that with an appearance at the eleven-time German champion Alba Berlin, which sent the MBC fans who had traveled with them into ecstasy.

With 108:75, the Albatrosses were literally swept off the floor by the Weißenfelsers in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. A historic result. In the 19th attempt, the MBC managed to win against the capital for the first time. It was also the highest away win in the history of the Central German basketball team in the German upper house.

MBC coach Krunic: “My team did an excellent job”

Head coach Predrag Krunic was full of praise afterwards. “Congratulations to my players, my coaching staff, the whole club and the fans who supported us here today. It was a very important victory for us,” said the 55-year-old and added: “My team has an excellent one “We did a job and followed our match plan. Everyone fought and deserved this win.”

Start-finish victory for the Wolves

The 8,244 spectators saw the Wolves win from start to finish. From the first to the last minute of the game, the Wolves were superior to third place in the table, sometimes even clearly. They won all four quarters, they shot better from the field (61 versus 49 percent), more often from distance (14 versus three three-pointers) and played better together (24 versus 17 assists). Chris-Ebou Ndow set a personal season record with 23 points. Diante Baldwin (19), Charles Callison, Martin Breunig (13 each) and Johnathan Stove (12) also scored in double figures.

Horror week for Alba – MBC had a game plan

To save the honor of the Albatrosses, it must be said that important players were missing, including regular top scorers Matt Thomas, Sterling Brown and world champion Johannes Thiemann. It was a horror week for coach Israel Gonzalez’s team. First they lost in the EuroLeague against Lyon-Villeurbanne (68:73) and Partizan Belgrade (74:89), now the team completely blew their league game against the Wolves.

The height is surprising, as MBC managing director Martin Geisler explains Sports in the East emphasized, but the Saxony-Anhalts had definitely planned for the wear and tear of their strength. “That was our game plan, that Alba’s reserves would run out,” said the 39-year-old. “We weren’t planning on going there to surrender anyway. We knew we’d go into the game more rested.”
