Fabio Di Giannantonio Takes First MotoGP Victory in Qatar

The fastest unemployed driver. Those were the words Fabio Di Giannantonio described himself after the race, who rode to his first victory in MotoGP in Qatar. As he stated, he would have given anything for the last lap in Lusail to never end. Francesco Bagnaia is happy with second place, increasing his lead over Jorge Martin, who had tire problems, to twenty-one points. Only thirty-seven of them remain in the game. In third place, the Italians were joined by their compatriot Luca Marini, who also had a very successful weekend in Qatar.

MotoGP – Závod / Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar 2023

1. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing Team) – WC 12th place … 134 points (- 303)

“I really wanted to win this, but it wasn’t easy. When I fought Pecc, I didn’t want to make any mistakes. I overtook him cleanly and first place is a great award. The bike worked great. I have to thank the team for the incredible job they did. We will try for a similar result in Valencia too!’

2. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) – WC 1st place … 437 points

“We got a fantastic result today. We leave for Valencia with a big lead in the championship. But 21 points is not enough for us to be completely calm. Anyway, we are happy with the work we have done. We expected to have the same pace as today on Saturday, but that didn’t happen. We had a great start to the race. I had the opportunity to show my pace right at the beginning. The only mistake I made was the one in the first corner when I got into the slipstream of the Fabia. It was a scary moment and I lost some time. I was very lucky. I think we could have fought for the win, but I’m happy with second place as well.”

3. Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 MotoGP Racing Team) – WC 7th place … 194 points (- 243)

“I am very happy. We had a pretty good weekend crowned by two podiums. It’s a kind of satisfaction for the work that the whole team does. The choice of tires was not random. I gave my absolute best to the race, at the same time I tried to save the tires as much as possible. In the end, I drove at one hundred percent.”
