Empowering Young Athletes for Success: A Social Integration Approach through Sport at Élan Béarnais Pau-Nord-Est

On the shiny parquet floor of the Bruno-Taricq room, in Pau, the soles of the young athletes crunch but it is not basketballs that they are exchanging, this November morning. “Today, they play badminton, we did running, muscle strengthening, American football throwing… The goal is not to make them basketball players or professional athletes, but to allow them to to acquire skills and interpersonal skills for their integration into the world of work,” explains Jimmy Ametis, integration coach through sport.

This former sports development agent for Élan Béarnais Pau Nord-Est returned to work for the club at the end of 2022, this time on the social aspect. He is responsible for carrying out the Three by Three system, a national project deployed – for the moment – until March 2024.

Engagement moral

“We currently have around ten young people aged 17 to 22 (the system is aimed at 16-25 year olds, Editor’s note), girls and boys, or around twenty since January 2023.”

The support of one hour and a half per day lasts a minimum of six months and can last up to fifteen months. It is voluntary, via a moral commitment contract, and allows remuneration of a few hundred euros (up to 500 euros per month) thanks to the National Association for Social Performance of Sport (ANPSS).

“We have sports practice and socio-professional workshops, which can range from CV workshops to professional imagery with the Solidarity Tie, sophrology, work on voice positioning with a singing teacher…”

“They have the skills”

Jimmy Ametis sees it every day: “They have the skills, even without knowing it. Adaptability, analytical skills, the ability to carry out several actions in parallel… These are transferable skills to the world of work, sought after by employers. » The question of “knowledge” is also present, and anything but secondary. “At the beginning, there are forgetting of ‘hello’ for example… Some people are often reminded of this at the beginning. »

It remains to give confidence – and desire – to bounce back outside of the system. The first feedback is positive, assures the coach who cites the latest graduates, one who returned to his studies, another who found training in Toulouse…

The young people, mostly from the local Mission, are thus mobilized, or re-mobilized, in their personal project. They are contacted again four months after leaving the system to assess their situation.

Élan Béarnais Pau-Nord-Est (the amateur club, distinct from Élan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez) is one of the Committed sports clubs, a label from the ministry. This year it has 434 licensees playing in 44 teams, and operates on a daily basis thanks to six employees.

Received at the Élysée

On Monday October 23, Jimmy Ametis was one of the guests at the Élysée for a reception organized in favor of those involved in integration through sport. Another Béarnais was present among the 400 educators or representatives of involved organizations: Pierre Brégeaux, director of the Maison pour tous Léo-Lagrange in Pau.
