VfB Stuttgart has reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. Deniz Undav’s goal was enough for the Swabians to win against the struggling Union Berlin.
Union Berlin is sliding ever deeper into crisis. The “Iron” failed in the second round of the DFB Cup at league rivals VfB Stuttgart, after the 0-1 (0-1) and the eleventh competitive defeat in a row, the situation is becoming increasingly critical for coach Urs Fischer.

Deniz Undav, representative of the injured top scorer Serhou Guirassy, scored for Stuttgart at the half-time whistle (45th minute). VfB, the league’s surprise team, continued its highs and is once again in the cup round of 16 (December 5th/6th).
Union must “work, work, work”
But Fischer is “still clearly” the right coach, said Union captain Christopher Trimmel. It’s “not the coach’s fault.” You now have to “work, work, work and accept the relegation battle. The league is now the top priority.”
The situation is “not easy for us. We have to stick with it. Hopefully we can turn the situation around,” said disappointed goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow.
Laidouni only hits the crossbar
Fischer switched to a back four – but that initially didn’t bring the momentum he was hoping for. Union was at least safe. VfB determined the game. But the Swabians found no gap. Opportunities? They didn’t exist at first.
It took until the 28th minute before Aissa Laidouni hit the crossbar with a powerful shot in one of the visitors’ few offensive moves. At the other end, Undav hit the post before taking the lead in a rather uneventful first half.
Little changed after the change. Union did not get the access Fischer wanted, VfB initially retained control. After about an hour, Berlin increased its efforts and Fischer increased the offensive, but the resources were lacking.
