Let’s turn the wheel of time back a few weeks: Pere Riba was sitting in Coco Gauff’s box at the US Open, giving instructions together with Brad Gilbert that ultimately led to the still only 19-year-old American’s first major title led. It could have been assumed that Riba and Gauff would continue to strive for success. But that is apparently not the case, as Gauff explained after her opening victory at the WTA Finals in Cancun.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t my decision, but we had to end our collaboration,” explained Gauff. “I had a great time with him and wish him all the best in his next chapter. If it were up to me, I would have loved to have him here. But things happen, life happens. There are no hard feelings on our part. Sometimes people make more of it than it really is.”

Gauff did not want to go into the exact reasons for the separation. “Some things just don’t work anymore. That’s all. I still think he’s a great guy. He’s taught me some fantastic things as a personality, as well as my game. I’m sure he’ll be successful in his next step be.”
