Club Brugge Scouring Market for Winter Reinforcement in Response to Mediocre Performances

The mediocre performances in the Jupiler Pro League are not without consequences for Club Brugge. Blauw-Zwart is currently scouring the market for winter reinforcement. In addition to a new goal getter, defensive reinforcement is also on the wish list.

After finishing only fourth in the league last season, Blauw-Zwart already experienced an animated transfer period during the summer. The people of Bruges said goodbye to some stalwarts such as Noa Lang, Clinton Mata and Mats Rits. In addition, the club coffers were further fueled with the sale of Abakar Sylla and Jack Hendry, among others.

On the other hand, Club itself also acquired several acquisitions. The necessary millions were spent on the arrival of Igor Thiago, Hugo Vetlesen and Michal Skoras. At the suggestion of new coach Ronny Deila, Philip Zinckernagel was also brought to Jan Breydel. But for the time being this does not appear to be enough to realize the ambitions.

Defensive reinforcement

The European and cup campaign has been impressive so far, but with a provisional seventh place, Club is simply underperforming in its own country. Moreover, the summer acquisitions did not provide the desired return at all. And so the West Flemish plan to make adjustments in January. Especially in defense.

Despite the departure of Mata and Sylla, among others, Club failed to strengthen its defense during the summer mercato. But the central duo Brandon Mechele-Jorne Spileers did not make a very secure impression. Dedryck Boyata finds it difficult to reach a consistent level, while Joel Ordoñez has barely any experience with the big boys.

Old acquaintance in the picture

Blauw-Zwart will solve that problem during the coming mercato. They are looking for someone who can take charge at the heart of the defense and take youngsters like Spileers and Ordoñez in tow. And in ‘Wait&See’, transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri once again mentions Pascal Struijk’s name.

The Dutchman with Belgian roots was also in the picture last summer. But when coach Daniel Farke was appointed at Leeds United, he is said to have opposed Struijk’s departure. And the defender has now even become captain of the current number 3 in the Championship.

Significant price tag

Nevertheless, Club would not be without a chance in advance. According to Tavolieri, Struijk does not completely rule out a move to Bruges despite his resurrection at Leeds. In addition, the intended transfer fee is said to have dropped slightly, more specifically to 15 million euros. However, this remains a significant amount by Belgian standards. It remains to be seen whether Blauw-Zwart, which is still in a takeover process, is willing/able to make such an investment in the middle of the season.
