Bo Svensson is no longer the coach of Mainz 05, the club made that official early on Thursday evening. After a long conversation with sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt, they “jointly decided to take this step”. U-23 coach Jan Siewert will take over the team until further notice.

“It’s very difficult for me to say goodbye, but I have the feeling that now is the time to do it,” Svensson is quoted as saying: “I’ve been from Mainz for 16 years. I’ve learned a lot here, met so many great people Club, among the fans, in the city, my children grew up here in Mainz. The experiences will shape me for the rest of my life.”

Recently, the sporting crisis has become more and more acute. Just a few days after the late 2-2 draw at VfL Bochum, Mainz were clearly defeated 3-0 by relegated Bundesliga and second division team Hertha BSC in the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday evening.
After the poor performance in Berlin, the fans clearly expressed their displeasure on social media and some called for Svensson to be given leave. “Mainz 05 owes a lot to Bo Svensson, especially the fact that we are still playing in the Bundesliga today,” said sports director Heidel: “In addition, we have completed two more confident seasons in the Bundesliga and delighted our fans with our football. Svensson’s time in Mainz ends prematurely, the 44-year-old had a current contract until June 30, 2024. The former Mainz professional and junior coach took over the FSV professionals in January 2021 and led them to stay in the league with a sensational comeback.
