Head coach Arthur Smith committed to change in starting quarterback in Atlanta only for Week 9

FLOWERY BRANCH — El domingo, Taylor Heinicke insisted that the Atlanta Falcons They were still the team Desmond Ridder. For Wednesday, the Falcons have — at least now — appointed Heinicke as the team’s starting quarterback.

The head coach of the Falcons, Arthur Smith, when announcing the movement, made it clear that it was a decision for the next week. He declined to answer multiple questions about whether the role of Heinicke as owner of Atlanta could last beyond Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikingsnor explain much about why the team came to that decision.

“There are a lot of variables,” he noted. Smith. “Then, really considering the last 72 hours and where we are now, going into this week with Minnesotagetting ready to play against the Vikingsobviously a very good team coming here.

“Go with Taylorthat’s where we are now.”

Smith said Ridder has passed the concussion protocol tests and that as long as the week goes well, he will serve as second in the order behind Heinicke. The conversation started because Ridder was evaluated for a concussion during the 28-23 loss to the Tennessee Titansa game in which Heinicke replaced Ridder at halftime.

On Sunday, Smith said that the Falcons they didn’t take out Ridder by performance, but because they seemed “out” despite passing the tests and, with the pace they were at, they wanted to stay with Heinicke. On Monday, Smith said he was going to rely on medical experts first when making decisions regarding his starting quarterback to Minnesota. On Wednesday, Smith pointed out that Ridder is now “discharged, available, but right now in the short term, it will be Taylor this Sunday.”

Smith said there is no long-term plan in mind when it comes to Heinicke vs. Ridder at this point in Atlanta, and that the Falconstied for the lead of the NFC On in 4-4 with the New Orleans Saintsare focused solely on Minnesota and a squad of Vikings who will be starting with the rookie Jaren Halla fifth-round pick this year, as his quarterback on Sunday.

“There are a lot of variables, just looking at it in the short term,” he explained. Smith. “But, really our focus is on the short term and what gives us the best opportunity on Sunday, everything is considered, a lot of variables.”

Smith declined to engage in medical conversations regarding where he is Ridder Smith He had mentioned discussions with the medical staff on Sunday and Monday– even though he was discharged. He didn’t get too involved in the decision-making process either, beyond continuing to say that “there are a lot of variables.”

Is it about performance? “There are many variables,” he said. Smith.

Is it a medical decision? “There are many variables,” he responded. Smith.

Could the Falcons be using the decision as a reset to Ridder after three starts full of turnovers? According to Smith“There are a lot of variables that go into this.”

From a performance standpoint, Ridder completed 65.4 percent of his passes this season for 1,701 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions in his eight starts. Also, he had seven fumbles, six lost. In the past three weeks, he has suffered seven turnovers, four lost fumbles and three interceptions, with four turnovers occurring in the red zone. Atlanta went 1-2 in those games, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneersbut with defeats against the Washington Commanders y Tennessee.

It is not the first time that Heinicke has been seen in this position. Last season, he replaced Carson Wentz in Washington. In 2021, he started 15 games after the team’s initial starter, Ryan Fitzpatrickwas injured at the opening of the campaign.

HeinickeWho is from Atlantahas played in 34 career games with 25 starts, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 5,920 yards, 35 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

Part of the reason why Atlanta signed to Heinicke It was his experience and what Smith described how his “spatial awareness, he has a unique ability to extend plays,” and also his decision-making when it comes to dumping the ball to a potential receiver. Having faced –and lost– to Heinicke In the past two seasons when he was in Washington He also helped evaluate the franchise before adding him as a substitute. Ridder.

“You have moments in the campaign where things arise,” he declared. Smith. “He’s a legitimate professional, and that’s why we like him. He walks in there and it’s not an easy job, I guess, you know, coming out of the bathroom and saying, ‘Hey, here’s the ball, go play.'”

“That’s what makes Taylor who he is and why we have so much appreciation for him.

Heinicke found out that he was playing on Sunday against Tennessee while I was in the bathroom at halftime. He went out and completed 12 of 21 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. The offense also moved more fluidly with Heinicke in the second half.

It is not clear if Heinicke He’ll have his best receiver on Sunday, either. Drake London abandoned the defeat against Tennessee with a groin injury, and although he told ESPN on Sunday that he will be “fine”, he did not train this Wednesday. Smith said they will see how the week goes for Londonwho has 37 receptions for 438 yards and two touchdowns, will be available against Minnesota.

Smith said they considered “everything” when the decision was made to start Heinicke this week, trying to avoid reactionary thoughts. Eventually, this is where she ended up. Start with Heinicke about Ridderat least for one game.

Could there be more? Smith He said that “I’m not going to get into hypotheticals,” either, regarding whether the performance of Heinicke against Minnesota could alter how the franchise deals with the position for the rest of the week.

“Every Monday, you know, that is our job, and everything that happens, you evaluate,” he shared Smith. “It’s our job to constantly evaluate everything.”
