América Rescues 2-2 draw against León in First-Leg of Quarterfinals

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Forward Henry Martín scored a double on Wednesday night and América rescued a 2-2 draw against León in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Apertura tournament in Mexico.

Martín, who is a Mexican national team, scored his goals at six and 47 minutes for the Águilas, who extended their unbeaten streak to 17 games.

América has not lost since the first date of the Apertura when it lost to Ciudad Juárez.

For the Águilas led by Brazilian André Jardine, a draw next Saturday on the Azteca stadium field is enough to advance to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive tournament.

The azulcremas were leaders and the team with the most goals for and the fewest against and are seeking their first league crown since the 2018 Apertura tournament, when they won the 13th title in their history.

Paul Bellón at two minutes and the Uruguayan Nicolás López at 39 scored for the Fiera, which is not liquidated and needs to win by any score.

León took the lead almost immediately in a corner kick play in which Bellón overtook his marker and scored a header against the left post of the goal defended by Luis Malagón.

América tied when Miguel Layún sent a cross from the right into the area where Martín appeared to convert with a low shot.

La Fiera took the lead again when Colombian Omar Fernández recovered a ball in midfield and sent a long pass to López, who headed alone into the area and converted with a soft shot placed above Malagón

At the start of the complement, Luis Quiñones took a couple of shots inside the area, the last one rejected by Bellón on the goal line and Martín took the rebound to convert with a powerful shot inside the six-yard box.

With a goal from right back Ricardo Chávez, Atlético San Luis gave a surprise and won 1-0 over Monterrey.

Chávez scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute and that was enough for the Atlético de Madrid subsidiary to take the victory.

San Luis, which entered this phase through a reclassification match, needs to draw next Saturday to advance to the round of the four best.

The Rayados, led by Argentine Fernando Ortiz, require a victory by any score and will advance by best position in the table, where they were second.

San Luis scored the only goal of the game when Jürgen Damm delayed a ball inside the area and Chávez took a shot that entered the right post of Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
