A weekend recap of NBA standout performances

The player: Tyrese Maxey (50 points) explodes his career record

It’s a performance that illustrates Tyrese Maxey’s great start to the season but also that of his team. It is above all a cardboard which illustrates its change in dimension. The 23-year-old is establishing himself as an All-Star and perhaps even a potential superstar. He behaved like one on Sunday evening. Maxey scored 50 points, his new career high, in leading the Sixers to victory against the Pacers (137-126). The eighth in a row for the Pennsylvania franchise.

The leader scored 20 baskets, including a winning shot on a pass from Joel Embiid one minute from the buzzer, to reach the 50-point plateau. He added 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Embiid was also very productive as he accumulated 37 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. This tandem works wonderfully and the entire Philadelphia team is flourishing. “We play together and we believe in each other,” remarks the Cameroonian pivot.

Indiana briefly got back to 105-104 early in the fourth quarter before falling to an 18-6 lead. The Sixers have therefore won 8 of their first 9 matches and they are off to their best start since 2001, the year they played in the NBA finals with an Allen Iverson MVP. Tyrese Maxey dedicated his performance to Kelly Oubre, his teammate hit by a car while leaving his house on foot last weekend.

The match: Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs let a 19-point lead slip away

After coming up against Rudy Gobert, Victor Wembanyama once again faced one of the best pivots and incidentally one of the best defenders in the league by challenging Bam Adebayo on Sunday evening. The Spurs hosted the Heat, the last NBA finalist, and they did not come far from victory. But the young team of the first choice of the draft ended up losing (113-118) after having had a 19-point lead.

The Frenchman blackened the statistics sheet by scoring 18 points in addition to his 11 rebounds and 7 assists. But he once again lacked skill (8 out of 22 on shots) and he conceded 7 turnovers. A downside to his game, even if it remains quite logical for a 19-year-old player who essentially plays with other young people. Each match is a painful learning experience. Especially since San Antonio had the match in hand but Miami made several runs: 17-0, 18-5 and finally a 12-0 to get the victory. Adebayo finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Duncan Robinson scored 26.

The performance: Anthony Edwards propels the Wolves against the Warriors

Sixth consecutive victory for Minnesota, which definitely asserts itself as a serious outsider in the West at the start of the season. The Wolves won on the Warriors floor (110-116) thanks to 33 points from Anthony Edwards. Stephen Curry scored 38 for Golden State but his teammates came up against the opposing defense, the best in the championship so far. No player other than Curry has scored more than 20 points for the Warriors this season.

The series: Houston defeats Denver and achieves a sixth success

The Rockets started the season with three straight defeats but no one has stopped them since. The team coached by Ime Udoka completely defeated the Nuggets last night (107-104)! The reigning champions had lost just one of their opening nine matches before falling to the in-form men in the West. Fred VanVleet and Alperen Sengun were the driving forces behind the Texan team, scoring 26 and 23 points respectively.

Nikola Jokic scored 36 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and delivered 11 assists in 38 minutes, his fourth triple-double of the season, but he was also forced to take 26 shots. He brought his team back to a short length (103-102) with 19 seconds remaining. In vain.

The duo: Irving and Doncic compile 65 points

All is well in Dallas. The Mavericks won their eighth victory in ten matches by beating the Pelicans (124-136). Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic were excellent. The two All-Stars reached the 30-point mark: 35 for the first, with 7 assists, and 30 for the second, who also distributed 9 caviars. The Texan franchise widened the gap by scoring 42 points in the third quarter.

At state: -28

Like the differential, negative therefore, of James Harden when he took his place on the field last night. The Clippers were dominated by the Grizzlies (101-105), who had been disastrous since the start of the season, each time their new star appeared on the floor. Although author of an important three-point basket to equalize at the end of the game, the former MVP was still disappointing by finishing the game with 11 points (4 of 12 on shots). Above all, Los Angeles lost a fifth game in a row, the fourth with Harden.

The French: Coulibaly shines despite defeat

The Wizards lost for the seventh time in nine games but Bilal Coulibaly had the best game of his young NBA career. He scored 20 points by converting 8 of his 12 attempts. He also grabbed 7 rebounds, stole 3 balls and distributed 3 assists. The kind of performance that should allow him to earn more and more playing time on a rebuilding Washington team.

Theo Maledon took 12 shots with the Hornets but only returned 2, finishing with 6 points. Two points and 3 rebounds in 12 minutes for Moussa Diabaté with the Clippers. Holder in the absence of Oubre, Nicolas Batum was once again good for the Sixers: 9 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Killian Hayes compiled 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists for Detroit. Rudy Gobert contributed to the Timberwolves’ new success by finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
