A great Valencia BC dreamed until the end to the rhythm of Brandon Davies

On Tuesday, Valencia BC could have been the first team to beat Real Madrid this season, but the victory slipped from their grasp (73-76) in the final seconds after a memorable match at La Fonteta, surrendered to his players and the leadership of a spectacular Brandon Davies and the always reliable Chris Jones.

Again making an effort to help despite his recent ankle injury, Chris Jones started alongside López-Arostegui, Víctor Claver, Damien Inglis and Brandon Davies, the great protagonist of a first quarter to rememberin which Valencia Basket finished ahead despite being trailing from the start.

Tavares opened the scoring, Davies himself scored his first triple moments later and Campazzo, Musa and Yabusele pulled Real Madrid to 5-9, also with a basket by Jones. Valencia BC did not collapse and despite a subsequent 0-5 partial with points from Deck, ‘Rambo’ Davies began to punish the visiting basket again and again, with hooks, triples and assists, putting the cherry on top with a block and 18 points at the end of the first quarter. Unstoppable for Tavares and Poirier and key in reaching 26-24, with only one failure in a triple.

Eight points advantage

Only Inglis, with six points, and Jones with two, had also scored in the taronjawhich after two free throws and two great actions by Jovic on the return to the court, opened a small gap on the scoreboard, which reached 37-29 after a dunk by Touré and a triple by Ojeleye.

Madrid seemed unable to stop the taronja scoring bleeding and tried to hold on in the game with the success from the 6.75 line of Rudy, Campazzo and Yabusele, but although they arrived alive at halftime, they did so with six points behind after a last basket by Jones that made it 49-43.

Chus Mateo’s men won the rebound battle, but between Tavares and Poirier they added only two points. for Davies’ 20 and Inglis’s 8.

Visitor reaction

Jones extended the lead on the return to the track, but The reaction of the Euroleague leader was immediate and with a partial score of 0-9 closed with a triple from CampazzoChus Mateo’s team took the lead on the scoreboard (51-52).

An unexpected emotional blow, but one that did not make Valencia BC leave the game.

López-Arostegui, after a great assist from Davies, returned the lead to the locals and the Basque scored again moments later.

But Madrid did not give up either and despite the fact that the scoring rate had dropped in both baskets, they managed to finish the quarter with a minimal advantage (62-63) after a triple by Hezonja after a few minutes of prominence from Deck and Musa, while at Valencia BC Inglis, Ojeleye and Reuvers scored.

The Tavares factor was beginning to be noticed in La Fonteta. Without success in front of the rim, he began to intimidate with his blocks and reboundsalthough he had to retire before the halfway mark of the fourth quarter due to a severe blow to his knee.

The points arrived in dribs and drabs and Davies and Inglis once again assumed scoring responsibility near the rim, although it was an individual action by Chris Jones that returned the lead to the Taronja (68-67) and brought La Fonteta to its feet, with a full house.

Jones Moment

An improbable triple by Hezonja poured cold water on the team and a timeout at 68-70 brought some calm with four minutes remaining. The moment of truth has arrived and in La Fonteta that implies the ‘Jones moment’. The American point guard, as in almost all tied finishes, put the team on his back with three consecutive baskets that tied the game (72-72). But again the game went uphill with a great basket by Campazzo against the opposition of Davies.

The Argentine, after regaining possession moments later, was fouled and made no mistake from the free throw line, making it 72-76 with 8 seconds left.. Mumbrú attempted a miracle with a timeout, but time passed quickly, Ojeleye received a foul with just 2.8 seconds left and after scoring the first and missing the second in search of a triple, the game slipped into the hands of Campazzo (73-76) after recovering possession. A painful defeat but in which nothing can be blamed on the players, who stood up to the end and put the only undefeated team in the Euroleague on the ropes.
