Defending champion and local hero Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune will be competing at the traditional Hamburg Open at Rothenbaum next year. This means that not only the German and Danish number one are there, but also two current top ten players.

The ATP clay court event takes place from July 15th to 21st. “In 2024 I will play at Rothenbaum again, hopefully to defend my title,” said Zverev in a video message. Rune, who is only 20 years old and is trained by Boris Becker, is currently eighth in the world rankings. He was already there at Rothenbaum in 2019 and 2021. Both are currently playing in the ATP Finals.

On July 30, Zverev won the final against the Serbian Laslo Djere in two sets in Hamburg. “I’m so excited to come back. It’s a very special place for me. Hamburg is my birthplace and this is where I started playing tennis,” said Zverev.

“The tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum is one of the most popular sporting events in Germany with a long tradition,” said Hamburg’s Interior and Sports Senator Andy Grote on Tuesday. “Alexander Zverev’s return after his magnificent final victory this year already promises an extremely exciting tournament. I am sure that with the Hamburg audience behind him he will give everything for another victory in his hometown.”

Two organizers: Tennis ladies move

This year there is a new organizer of the men’s edition in Tennium – the organization will be in the hands of the sports agency for at least five years. Ticket sales start on November 22nd. The licenses for the men’s and women’s tournaments will no longer be in one hand next year. This means there are now two organizers. “From our point of view, we would of course be happy if the tournaments came together again,” said Grote. “But it’s not that easy with two organizers.”

The female tennis professionals will not hold their tournament in July 2024 at Rothenbaum, but in Hamburg’s city park. The 250 WTA tournament will take place from July 21st to 26th, between Wimbledon and the Olympic Games.
