In the 24th minute there was a long break in the game, which meant that nine minutes were added at the end of the half: RWE striker Leonardo Vonić collided with Waldhof goalkeeper Jan-Christoph Bartels. The Mannheimer sustained an injury, had to be treated and eventually replaced – Lucien Hawryluk came into the game (30th).

About ten minutes later, the new Mannheim keeper was the focus of the best scoring opportunity of the first half: After a cross from Lucas Brumme, the header defense fell short, Vinko Šapina finished from around eleven meters away – his direct shot flew in the direction of the lower left corner of the goal, but was stopped by Hawryluk.

SV Waldhof had the first good chance of the second half: On the left side, Mannheim’s Charles-Isaiah Herrmann was able to beat Felix Götze and Šapina and move into the penalty area; However, his shot from nine meters was not placed enough and was therefore easy prey for Essen goalkeeper Jakob Golz.

Obuz fails with a penalty kick from the goalkeeper

Shortly afterwards, referee Dr. Robert Kampka on the other side scored a penalty for RWE: Essen’s Marvin Obuz dribbled in the Essen penalty area and fell in a duel with Samuel Abifade. Obuz took the penalty himself, but his shot wasn’t hard or placed enough for Hawryluk to hold on to the ball as he followed up (63′).

Harenbrock meets via direct acceptance

The Red and Whites didn’t let that discourage them and took the lead just five minutes later: After a cross from José-Enrique Ríos-Alonso from the right, Cedric Harenbrock took the ball directly and shot from seven meters on the left to make it 1-0 a (68th).

And the Revierklub was able to quickly extend its lead: After a one-two with Harenbrock, Obuz was able to shoot from a half-right position in the penalty area and hit the near corner (74′). In this way, Obuz redeemed himself for his penalty miss.

Mannheim fought back and had good chances through Herrmann (77′) and a free kick from Bentley Bahn (84′) – but had no luck.

So the game ended 2-0. RWE extended its series of successes: Coach Christoph Dabrowski’s team won its five most recent third division games and even its six most recent competitive games across all competitions. Thanks to the victory, Essen climbed to third place in the 3rd league, at least for the time being.
