Tracking the Undefeated: Who Will Remain Perfect in College Football’s 2023 Season?

We start with 133 teams without a loss and quickly go down from there. An undefeated season is the college football dream, but only a special group have found perfection. Last season, Georgia went 15-0 to win its second consecutive national championship. Will we see another unbeaten run in 2023?

After five weeks, 22 teams are still perfect. Follow along as we keep track of the remaining undefeated teams. Schools are listed by AP Top 25 rankings, then by alphabetical order if they’re not ranked.

No. 1 Georgia (5-0)

Next game: vs. No. 20 Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 2022 (15-0, won CFP national title)

Can the Bulldogs do it again? Georgia has won two titles in a row and even went 15-0 a year ago. Nebraska was the last to post back-to-back perfect seasons, doing so in 1994 and 1995.

No. 2 Michigan (5-0)

Next game: at Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 1997 (12-0, finished No. 1 in AP poll)

The Wolverines made the College Football Playoff in each of the past two seasons, thanks to wins against rival Ohio State and Big Ten titles. Michigan has been ranked No. 2 each week in the AP poll.

No. 3 Texas (5-0)

Next game: vs. No. 12 Oklahoma (in Dallas) on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 2005 (13-0, won BCS national championship)

The Longhorns established themselves as a contender with a 10-point win at Alabama and followed that up with more wins, including a 40-14 pounding of then-No. 24 Kansas.

No. 4 Ohio State (4-0)

Next game: vs. Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 2012 (12-0, finished No. 3 in AP poll)

The Buckeyes’ defense has been the story thus far, allowing only 34 points through four games. A road win against Notre Dame is their prized result right now.

No. 5 Florida State (4-0)

Next game: vs. Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 2013 (14-0, won BCS national championship)

A rout of LSU has turned into very tight wins against Boston College and Clemson in recent weeks, but the Seminoles are back in the top five. QB Jordan Travis has 12 total touchdowns after four games.

No. 6 Penn State (5-0)

Next game: vs. UMass on Saturday, Oct. 14
Last undefeated season: 1994 (12-0, finished No. 2 in AP poll)

The defense has been stellar, allowing 48 points going into the sixth game. The season will likely depend on how the offense does against Ohio State and Michigan.

No. 7 Washington (5-0)

Next game: vs. Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 14
Last undefeated season: 1991 (12-0, finished No. 1 in Coaches Poll)

The offense has been on fire, scoring at least 40 points in four games. QB Michael Penix Jr. has 16 touchdown passes in only five games.

No. 8 Oregon (5-0)

Next game: at Washington on Saturday, Oct. 14
Last undefeated season: 1916 (7-0-1)

The Ducks made a statement with a 42-6 crushing of Colorado and have been dominant almost every moment (save for the Texas Tech game).

Last undefeated season: 2004 (13-0, won BCS national championship) — vacated

Caleb Williams won the Heisman last season and has more ridiculous numbers in 2023. After five games, he has 1,603 passing yards and 24 total touchdowns.

No. 12 Oklahoma (5-0)

Next game: vs. Texas (in Dallas) on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 2000 (13-0, won BCS national championship)

Despite an undefeated start, the football power has flown under the radar going into October. That will change if the Sooners can knock off rival Texas.

Last undefeated season: 1917 (6-0-1)

QB Cameron Ward has yet to throw an interception while accounting for 16 total touchdowns. The Pac-12 title chase is full of ranked teams — and the Cougars are one of them.

UNC picked up nonconference wins against the Big Ten (Minnesota) and SEC (South Carolina) and now enter into a crucial two-game ACC stretch with Syracuse and Miami.

Last undefeated season: 2001 (12-0, won BCS national championship)

The Hurricanes have rolled through their first four games, including a 15-point win against Texas A&M. Now it’s time for ACC play.

Last undefeated season: 1898 (7-0)

The Wildcats moved into the rankings after beating Florida for the third year in a row. It’s the first time UK has done that since 1948-1951 — when the Wildcats were led by Bear Bryant.

No. 21 Missouri (5-0)

Next game: vs. No. 23 LSU on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 1909 (7-0-1)

A thrilling last-second win against Kansas State on a 61-yard field goal is the highlight of the campaign. But LSU and Kentucky are up next.

No. 24 Fresno State (5-0)

Last undefeated season: 1985 (11-0-1)

The defense has been stingy, allowing only 19 points in the last three games.

No. 25 Louisville (5-0)

Next game: vs. No. 10 Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 7

It took a while, but the Cardinals are now in the top 25. They’ll have to upset top-10 Notre Dame to stay there.

Air Force (5-0)

Last undefeated season: 1958 (9-0-2, finished No. 6 in AP poll)

The Falcons are running over teams, averaging almost 330 yards per game on the ground.

James Madison (5-0)

Next game: vs. Georgia Southern on Saturday, Oct. 14
Last undefeated season: 1975 (9-0-1 in DII)

Though JMU is new to the FBS, the Dukes have been here before. Last year, James Madison started 5-0 and was No. 25 in the AP poll before falling to Georgia Southern.

Liberty (4-0)

Next game: vs. Sam Houston on Thursday, Oct. 5
Last undefeated season: Never

QB Kaidon Salter has 919 passing yards and 268 rushing yards through four games as the Flames lead the CUSA contenders.

Marshall (4-0)

Next game: at NC State on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 1999 (13-0, finished No. 10 in AP poll)

The Thundering Herd beat the ACC’s Virginia Tech earlier this season and get another ACC foe in NC State next.

Maryland (5-0)

Next game: at No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 7
Last undefeated season: 1951 (10-0, finished No. 3 in AP poll)

The Terrapins haven’t been tested yet, but it doesn’t get bigger than visiting undefeated Ohio State in Week 6.
