FC St. Pauli has to let go of top scorer Marcel Hartel. On Thursday, Hamburg announced that the midfielder, whose contract was expiring, had decided to move.

“The time here was outstanding,” Hartel told the fans and the club – but not where he is going. Hartel is leaving the local club “with an unknown destination,” according to FCSP. Rumor has it that Hartel has been linked with Borussia Mönchengladbach, for example.

“The kilometers Cello covered on the pitch were impressive and important for our game,” emphasized head coach Fabian Hürzeler. Hartel added: “It is not easy for me to take this step. But sometimes special opportunities arise in life.”

It took Hartel a while to score goals for the brown and white team. After two and five goals in competitive games in his first two seasons at Millerntor, the Cologne native significantly improved his returns in the past season. Hartel contributed 21 goals and 15 assists in the league and cup and was a decisive factor in the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga from the Hamburg center.
