Virgil Van Dijk’s teammates beat the Greeks this Monday evening and are back in the race for the Euro.

Hanging on for a long time, the Netherlands won 1-0 thanks to a late penalty against Greece on Monday in Athens, relaunching themselves in the race to qualify for Euro 2024.

Thanks to this victory, the Dutch move to second place in Group B with 12 points like their evening opponents, but have one game in hand.

Beaten 2-1 on Friday in Amsterdam by France, leader of the group which had validated its ticket for the Euro on this occasion, Ronald Koeman’s men had a hard time beating the Greeks.

The Batavians missed a first penalty by Wout Weghorst (28th). The second obtained in the last minutes was, however, transformed by captain Virgil Van Dijk (90+3).

On the Greek side, this defeat is the first at home in the Gustavo Poyet era. Frustrated by this setback which considerably reduced his team’s chances of qualifying, the Uruguayan coach was sent off at the end of the match by the referee. The Netherlands will host Ireland on November 18 before traveling to Gibraltar on the 21st, while Greece will host France that same day.
