The Founder and Principles of Judo: Jigoro Kano’s Impact on Martial Arts

Jigoro Kano was the founder of the martial art judo (“The Gentle Way”). He was born on October 28, 1860 in Mikage, a village near Kyoto. He later studied at the Imperial University in Tokyo. Kano earned doctorates in philosophy and political science. At the age of 18, Kono decided to learn jujutsu. After being trained by several masters, he founded his own school in 1882 and named the discipline Judo (“The soft way”).
His school was called Kodokan and represented the maxim of “Maximum effectiveness, mutual respect and well-being“. Kano removed the dangerous aspects of jujutsu such as kicks and punches.
The art of judo was born. A strong educational aspect was added. Body and soul should be trained equally.

The moral principles established by Jigoro Kano were fundamentally different from previous martial arts. So far, the goal has been to render an “enemy” incapable of fighting if possible. Now, in addition to one’s own physical and mental perfection, the well-being of one’s partner was in the foreground. The principle of mutual help and understanding still governs the behavior of judoka on the mat today.

The sport of judo follows four main goals:

Improvement of motor skills, physical function, muscle and organ strength Creation of a competition system controlled by strict rules in which athletes can compete and compare each other Improvement of mental abilities and development of character and personality traits Development of socially integrative forms of behavior taking advantage of the natural joy of movement
