The Benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: An Interview with Juanjo Romero

Juanjo Romero is a young martial arts lover from Santeo who this year teaches Brazilian jiu jitsu classes at the Dinamic gym. In this interview he talks about this discipline born from judo and the benefits it brings to people who practice it.

What martial art do you practice?

What we do is Brazilian jiu jitsu or Brazilian jiu jitsu. It was born from judo when a judoka goes to Brazil on a world tour teaching a martial art that was new and that, in fact, was called Kanō jiu jitsu before being called judo by its founder Jigorō Kanō. Judo has two parts, one which is the fight on foot in which you take the rival and throw him, throw him to the ground, this is the judo that we know today, and then the ne waza part which is the part of fight on the ground. Brazilian jiu jitsu focuses on fighting on the ground, it is true that the fight begins standing up and you have to throw, but basically it takes place on the ground.

How did you discover this discipline?

I have always liked martial arts and I discovered it after watching the UFC, a mixed martial arts league in the United States, in which fighters use this technique a lot, and it is the most effective technique when fighting. . It seems that boxing or kickboxing are the most effective, but when a fighter who does jiu jitsu arrives, he takes the fight to the ground, and dominates it there. That’s when I became interested in jiu jitsu, because I started boxing on my own, then I got into kickboxing and then I started doing jiu jitsu.

When you started?

I started with a colleague from here in Los Santos, Samuel, in 2019 or 2020. He had a tatami and I know that from here in town he was the only one who did jiu jitsu, because there were no gyms in the area where they did it. , and I told him ‘hey, let’s practice it’ and I started with him. Last year I decided to go to a gym in Aceuchal, which is the closest there is, and I started to get my Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor title.

How long did it take you, more or less, to be prepared to teach classes?

The Brazilian jiu jitsu course lasts 2 years or so, the Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor course. Besides, I’m graduating, taking classes and they’re moving up my grade.

How many degrees are there?

There are actually 5 belts: white, blue, purple, brown and black. Then, within each belt there are 4 degrees. So, it takes longer to go from one belt to another, it is a martial art that is slow to acquire knowledge.

How did you get the opportunity to teach classes at the Dinamic gym?

My teacher Duelt, in Aceuchal, tells me ‘hey, I think you’re ready to teach classes, look for a gym in the area’ and I, who have a very good thing with Vigilio del Dinamic, tell him what do you think? Let’s give some classes there; He didn’t give me any type of problem, on the contrary, I have to be grateful to Dinamic for the facilities that he has given me.

What can you say about these classes? Who are they aimed at, the times and what is the duration?

In principle I have a group of adults, from 14-15 years old, regardless of age or sex. It is dedicated to anyone, it is true that if they offer me one more hour in the gym I would like to open it for children. We teach on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8.

Is any prior knowledge needed?

It is not necessary because we start from the basic knowledge, the basic foundations of the martial art and we teach everything slowly. It is a sport that we have to practice a lot for the techniques to come out, it is a sport that requires certain physical skills such as flexibility, agility… but the people who come again do not have it and with this martial art you are acquiring: having more flexibility , more agility, strength, resistance… this sport gives you all that.

Apart from the physical, what else does it contribute?

Martial arts in general instill martial values, as its name indicates, very intrinsic in martial arts is respect; humility; teamwork, even if it seems like it is an individual sport, because if you do not have confidence in your partner to do the techniques you will not advance; sacrifice… all this is taught to you by any martial art, not just jiu jitsu, especially those with Japanese tradition.

You combine these classes with your work, how do you handle it?

I handle it well because at the moment I usually work in the morning or if at any given time a job coincides with classes, I can call a classmate to come teach the class or we move the class to another day.

Would you like to highlight something about jiu jitsu?

It is a very beautiful martial art, people think that when you go to martial arts you will come home with your face made up of a map of blows, but it is a martial art where there is no punching, but it is a martial art where there are no punches. , kicks… everything is based on grips, immobilizations and we use dislocations or strangulations that seem to sound strong, but we really are very careful and when you start to feel that it hurts you touch so that the partner stops. We go very slowly, so it is a very safe martial art that, for example, is very good for women because it can serve as self-defense in a complicated situation. I also want to add that my club, Juanjo Romero BJJ, is associated with my teacher’s, Duelt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is the parent club of the others. Master Duelt has instructors in several towns and all of those clubs are associated with Duelt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is from Aceuchal.
