Sergio Staino has died – News

Sergio Staino, 83, died this morning in hospital in Florence. The cartoonist, Bobo’s father and former director of the Unit, had been hospitalized for a few days: he had been ill for some time. Sergio Staino, who was also a writer and director – he made his directorial debut in 1989 with Cavalli si nasce – was born in Piancastagnaio (Siena) and then lived in Scandicci, on the outskirts of Florence.

With Bobo he made his first appearance in 1979, in the monthly comics Linus: since then a long adventure, with a polite but at the same time biting satire. Bobo, committed to the left and the prototype of the average thinking Italian, worker and disillusioned family man, passed through the pages of various newspapers and magazines, where he often commented on the events of the day in an incisive way. “Bobo was born, as often happens, out of desperation – Staino said years ago -. I was a restless man, in crisis. I was looking for what to do when I grew up. The image of Bobo was born instinctively. Even the name. Bobo is an angry , disillusioned, romantic, democratic, left-wing”. Collaborator between 1980 and 1981 of the cultural page of the newspaper Il Messaggero, and from the following year of l’Unità, of which he was the ‘historical’ cartoonist and then became director in 2016, Staino had also founded and directed the weekly magazine since 1986 satirical Tango. He had also collaborated with Rai3, where in 1987 he directed the Teletango column and, in 1993, created the satirical program Cielito Lindo. He also worked with Avvenire, La Stampa and Atlante, the online magazine of Treccani.it.

“Even the best pencils wear out. Goodbye Sergio.” Vauro Senesi thus greets Sergio Staino, with a cartoon showing a pencil that has become short due to having been sharpened too much.
