Reds & Blues Secure Victory in Quarter Finals of World Cup

On this Sunday of the quarter finals of the World Cup, thanks to a good first half, the reds & blues won 23-15 against Lannemezan during the sixth day of the National 2 federal championship at home.

With the stands less crowded than in recent weekends at Émile Vanier, certainly because of the cooler temperatures than in previous days, Julien Veniat’s XV approached this match one point behind its opponent of the day (respectively 4th with 15 points and 3rd with 16 points).

One-sided first half

From the start of the match, sponsored by Chopard Mercedes and Pacheco Da Silva, the Mâconnais occupied the opposing half of the field with a first penalty missed on the left by Léo Perricaudet after two minutes of play. It was only a postponement since he redeemed himself eleven minutes later to open the scoring of this match with a penalty slightly to the right this time, 3-0 for ASM after thirteen minutes. After a canceled try from Lavaux, the Mâconnais bulls scored the first try of the match in force through number 1 Sunia Vuli following a great collective push, converted try, 10-0 (22′). In the 30th minute, the players from Cercle Amical Lannemezanais had the opportunity to reduce the gap but the penalty was completely missed by number 15 Cloute. Two minutes later, Anthony Lavaux puts pressure on his direct opponent with a ball that bounces a lot, he intercepts and goes to flatten it on the right side, a try converted by Perricaudet, 17-0 (32′). A little bit of friction just before the break with Lavaux and opposing number 10 Sera Peyrigan who both received a yellow card and were sent out for ten minutes. With the wind at their backs, AS Mâcon have mastered their subject and logically lead 17-0 at half-time.

“Rediscovered confidence”

Anthony Lavaux, author of a try and a great performance “on my try, it was 50/50, we had to put pressure on, stay behind very close to the opponent and hope for a favorable rebound, that could have lean in their favor and on the contrary it is for us. We remember that last year we didn’t have this kind of ball, so the wheel is turning and that gives us confidence.”

Return to the score without consequence

As soon as they return to the field, the visitors want to take advantage of the wind with them to try to come back to the score, and this is done after only four minutes in the second period, attempt by Encausse not transformed on the left side for Lannemezan, 17- 5. Not much then for twenty minutes except a big clash between two players which forced the referee to interrupt the match for five minutes to allow the trainers to intervene. Still on the left, the Hautes-Pyrénées players will score a new try this time transformed by number 15 Cloute, 17-12 (68′), the Mâconnais are scared. Fortunately, following a foul in the center, the reds and blues chose a penalty which Léo Perricaudet won, 20-12 (70′). But the Occitans have not said their last word and on a very eccentric penalty on the left, Cloute finds the post… in, 20-15 (78′). It’s far from over since there will be 5 minutes of stoppage in play following the interruption due to injury. But AS Mâcon will resist and offer themselves two new penalties (1/2) to ensure the victory, 23-15.

” We are growing “

Coach Julien Veniat tells us of his satisfaction at the end of the match “in the second half we are against the wind, we suffer, it’s normal and our bench gives us the possibility of controlling this end of the match a little better with a little more lucidity on the offensive side. Afterwards it is true that at 20-12 in our favor, when I saw the penalty which hits the post and which goes in, 20-15, I saw again the bad scenario of two weeks ago against the Stade Métropolitain. Fortunately, we grew up scoring three points twice, it’s interesting. Now hot, it feels really good before going on vacation because we beat a direct opponent who leaves with 0-4, and who therefore does not take any points, it is a good accounting operation for us. The state of mind is good, I told them several times, we have to manage to kill the matches in the first half, especially this evening, if there are 30 points for us at the break, it will not be there is nothing to say. In this first half, we had nothing to envy of any team in the group. Afterwards obviously, if we foil, we are at the mercy of everyone. This victory allows us to validate the first two blocks and will allow us to spend two comfortable weeks in terms of accounting.”

Precisely in terms of accounting, the Mâconnais carried out a very good operation by overtaking their opponents of the day and climbing onto the podium of the Nationale 2 with 19 points, one point behind second Auch.
