In the gymnasium, dozens of students gathered in groups of twos and threes to play badminton or table tennis, moving their bodies diligently from the morning.

The students’ faces were bright.

Students said, “I feel refreshed and good when I exercise in the morning,” “I wake up and my mind is clear, so it’s good for class,” “It’s hard to come out early, but it’s okay when I think about exercising and having fun with my friends.” They showed positive responses such as “I feel like my relationship with my friends and seniors and juniors is getting better by exercising with them,” and “My skills have also improved in physical fitness tests.”

At Dong Girls’ Middle School, all students participate in a rope jumping league in the morning before regular classes, and daily sports days for students who wish to participate include table tennis, expressive activities (cheerleading, creative dance), badminton, volleyball, and netball.

This is a morning physical education activity introduced by the Jeju Provincial Office of Education starting this year. This is a program that helps students start their day energetically by participating in a special program suited to school conditions before regular classes begin.

The Office of Education requires all schools in the province to voluntarily implement morning physical education activities, and 15 of these schools (6 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 1 high school) are designated and operated as pilot schools. Pilot schools will receive a budget of 5 million won per school.

Sports activities vary from school to school, including rope jumping, futsal, badminton, plogging, volleyball, taekwondo, basketball, and dance.

Activities are carried out in various formats depending on the size and situation of the school, such as an all-class league type, a teacher-accompanied type, a school sports club-linked type, and a day-of-the-week type.

Through operating pilot schools, the Office of Education aims to discover various excellent models of physical education programs suited to school conditions and spread them to other schools.

Superintendent Kim Kwang-soo said, “Students will enjoy coming to school in the morning by participating in morning sports activities, and start a day full of liveliness through sports.” He emphasized, “We will protect children’s healthy lives by further activating morning sports activities in the future.” did.
