Paul Pogba’s testosterone test has been confirmed

Footballer Paul Pogba’s testosterone positivity found after an anti-doping test carried out at the end of the Udinese-Juventus match on 20 August was confirmed by counter-analyses carried out this week. Following these results, the National Anti-Doping Tribunal (TNA) will initiate proceedings against the player which, at the end of the investigation phase, could lead to a disqualification from sporting activity of between one and four years.

At the start of the season, Pogba, who is 30 years old, had been used for just over 50 minutes in two league games out of the three played by Juventus before his positive test. He also returned to Juventus in the summer of 2022, but then missed the entire season – including the World Cup in Qatar with France – due to physical problems that he had also brought with him into the current championship. In Udine, in the doping control match, he had not played.

After the first results, Pogba was suspended as a precaution pending the counter-analysis carried out on Thursday on a second urine sample taken from the player at the end of Udinese-Juventus.

Testosterone is one of the substances prohibited for athletes by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) both in training and in competition. During the proceedings that will be launched in these weeks, Pogba may be referred and possibly obtain a reduced disqualification if he effectively demonstrates the “non-intentionality” of the hiring. However, if he were to admit the negligent hiring, he could choose a plea bargain in order to obtain a reduction in the suspension established by the TNA.

The extent of the disqualification could also affect the contract that the player signed with Juventus until 30 June 2026. The club could decide to keep him among its members with a reduction in salary or proceed with the termination of the contract instead. Pogba’s salary at Juventus is currently around 11 million euros gross per season.
