Giro 2024: the complete route map and detailed step-by-step profile of the Tour of Italy

From Saturday May 4, and for three weeks, the peloton will race the first Grand Tour of the year 2024 on Italian roads.

This 107th Giro in history promises, with a route that builds to a crescendo before the apotheosis during a final week spent mainly in the Alps. Here are the details of the 21 steps of this Tour of Italyfor which Tadej Pogacar promises to be the huge favorite.

Stage 1 (May 4): Venaria Reale – Turin (140 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 1:50 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:10 p.m.

The big start is given around Turin, with a bumpy first course. Three difficulties listed in the mountain classification are in fact on the menu, including a 2nd category climb with slopes of up to 12%.

Stage 2 (May 5): San Francesco al Campo – Santuario di Oropa (161 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 12:55 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:00 p.m.

A route with a profile similar to that of the day before, with three difficulties, all placed at the end of the stage. The finish will be judged at the top of the Santuario di Oropa, the first category 1 pass of this Giro (11.8 km altitude difference at 6.2%).

Stage 3 (May 6): Novara – Fossano (166 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 1:10 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:05 p.m.

Very small hills and lots of flat ground, for a stage promised to sprinters in the Po plain.

Stage 4 (May 7): Acqui Terme – Andora (190 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 12:30 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:00 p.m.

A stage with two facets. The first part, rugged, offers a 3rd category climb up to 1,000 m altitude, before a long descent to Ligurian sea level and around sixty kilometers of flat ground, until a probable sprint finish.

Stage 5 (May 8): Genoa – Lucca (178 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 12:45 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:05 p.m.

A profile generally similar to that of the day before, with an initially bumpy route in the Ligurian hinterland before a calmer second part.

Stage 6 (May 9): Torre del Lago Puccini – Rapolano Terme (180 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 12:45 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:00 p.m.

A first flat part, a second slightly more uneven but without major difficulty, despite around fifteen kilometers on the white paths of Strade Bianche halfway.

Stage 7 (May 10): Foligno – Perugia (40 km), time trial. First departure: 1:00 p.m./Last arrival: 5:09 p.m.

The first stage of this Giro is generally flat but offers a robust climb (1.3 km at 11.8%) shortly before the finish, with a sector of up to 16%.

Stage 8 (May 11): Spoleto – Prati di Tivo (152 km), mountain. Fictitious departure: 12:30 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:57 p.m.

The first mountain stage of this Giro is short but dynamic, with three listed climbs and a summit finish at Prati di Tivo, 1st category pass (14.6 km at 7%).

Stage 9 (May 12): Allezzano – Naples (214 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 12:00 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:00 p.m.

A stage listed by the organizers as rugged, on the eve of the rest day. It is actually rather flat, despite some slight elevations as you approach the arrival in Naples.

Rest (May 13): Naples

Stage 10 (May 14): Pompei – Casano Mutri (142 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 1:05 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:58 p.m.

Intense recovery after the rest day, with two significant difficulties and a finish judged at the end of a long climb (category 1, 18 km at 5.6%).

Stage 11 (May 15): Foriano di Val Fortore – Francavilla al Mare (207 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 12:05 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:57 p.m.

Long stage with a few hills in the first part, then an 80 km straight line along the Adriatic leading to a sprint.

Stage 12 (May 16): Martinsicuo – Fano (193 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 12:25 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:59 p.m.

The so-called “small walls” stage will offer little respite with around ten climbs and descents of relative difficulty, but the sequence of which could benefit adventurers.

Stage 13 (May 17): Riccione – Cento (179 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 1:00 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:04 p.m.

Flat, flat and more flat: a real transition stage, without any difficulty on the horizon, and one of the last opportunities to shine for the sprinters.

Stage 14 (May 18): Castiglione delle Stiviere – Desenzano del Garda (31.2 km), time trial. First departure: 1:20 p.m./Last Arrival: 5:09 p.m.

The second and final time will be rolling and without any real difference in altitude, on the outskirts of Lake Garda. A respite then, before attacking the Alps.

Stage 15 (May 19): Manerba del Garda – Livigno (222 km), mountain. Fictitious departure: 10:25 a.m. / Estimated arrival: 3:51 p.m.

An early start for the longest stage, and one of the most difficult of this Giro. Five climbs listed in the mountain classification, three of which are category 1. After more than 200 km of racing, the last two will be grueling, with passages of up to 19% on the Mottolino ski slopes.

Repos (20 May): Livigno

Stage 16 (May 21): Livigno – Santa Cristina Valgardena (202 km), mountain. Fictitious departure: 11:25 a.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:51 p.m.

A fanfare start, with a non-category pass quickly reached: the grueling Passo dello Stelvio (19.6 km at 7.5%). The rest will not be encouraging, with two final climbs and slopes of up to 16% at the end of this long stage.

Stage 17 (May 22): Selva di Val Gardena – Passo del Brocon (159 km), mountain. Fictitious departure: 12:25 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:53 p.m.

Dense and intense, this 17th stage offers five climbs, including two of the Brocon on two different slopes, with an arrival after the last 2 kilometers at an average of 12% and very tight turns.

Stage 18 (May 23): Fiera di Primiero – Padua (178 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 1:05 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 5:02 p.m.

A respite after several days in the mountains. No major difficulty in this flat stage, with a probable final sprint.

Stage 19 (May 24): Mortegliano – Sappada (157 km), hilly. Fictitious departure: 1:05 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:59 p.m.

After a flat first part, the menu gets tougher with a succession of climbs and descents and a total of three climbs listed in the mountain classification.

Stage 19. Giro d’Italia

Stage 20 (May 25): Alpago – Bassano del Grappa (184 km), mountain. Fictitious departure: 11:40 a.m. / Estimated arrival: 4:54 p.m.

If the final gaps in the general standings have not yet been widened, they will inevitably be during this last mountain stage. The highlight is a double ascent of Monte Grappa (18.1 km at 8.1%) before a downhill finish.

Stage 21 (May 26): Rome – Rome (125 km), flat. Fictitious departure: 3:30 p.m. / Estimated arrival: 6:33 p.m.

After three weeks of intense efforts, the deliverance for the runners at the end of this last Roman ride which will consecrate the winner of the 107th Giro.
