Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Manchester United: Women’s Champions League Clash

Goals: Martens (17th, 47th) and Baltimore (57th) for the Parisiennes // Naalsund (46th) for the Mancuniennes

It was definitely very good to be Parisian this Wednesday. After the XXL feat of Paris FC which eliminated Wolfsburg, last finalist of the Champions League, in Germany, Paris Saint-Germain met at the Parc des Princes to win, against Manchester United, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. A successful mission for the girls of Jocelyn Prêcheur, who scored a convincing 3-1 victory, having dominated the Mancunian visitor.

We have finished the Chawinga show

English tradition obliges, the match starts with two big physical duels. In front, the very restless Geyse comes to test the meager reflexes of the Parisian defense (4th and 7th). On the other side, the Tabitha Chawinga show starts again. The Malawian receives a long through ball from Clare Hunt, Mary Earps comes out, but too off-center, the Parisian attacker misses the target (10th). It is also from her that the light will come: after yet another breakthrough on her left side, she sees her shot being repelled with her foot by the Mancunian goal, but can count on Lieke Martens, who comes as a second blade to send a bag under the bar (1-0, 17e). A goal which dampens the hopes of the Mancuniennes, who are entitled to the whistles of the Parisian ultras every time they take the ball. Up front, Geyse always tries, but often locks herself up too much alone (26th), when Ella Toone doesn’t launch shots without believing it herself (43rd). Not enough to worry PSG who often take their chances in the opposing area (34th and 42nd) and return to the locker room with the advantage.

Imperial Kiedrzynek on his line

The second half had barely kicked off, Manchester United equalized after a good move from Geyse who served Lisa Naalsund alone at the far post (1-1, 46th). A very temporary cold snap at the Parc des Princes, as Lieke Martens scored twice the next minute, on a cross from Tabitha Chawinga (2-1, 47e). A thought for the VIPs who leave their boxes a little late. Katarzyna Kiedrzynek keeps her team in the match by making a big save in front of Hannah Blundell, author of a powerful first-intention strike (51st). On the other side of the field, Sandie Baltimore brings the whole park to its feet with a little dive that lobs Mary Earps for the break (3-1, 57e).

The noose tightens, however, for PSG, who concede two very big Mancunian chances with a free kick from Katie Zelem which grazes the post of Katarzyna Kiedrzynek (69th), then a header from Leah Galton which lobs the Parisian goalkeeper and believes to reduce the score, before the referee whistles a foul on his duel (71st). In front, Geyse is still harvesting, even when Lucía García comes to serve him a goal on a plate (78th). Ella Toone also believes she is putting the Mancunians back on the right path by hitting the right with a shot that ends up on the post at the very end of the match (90th+4). But the English will suffer the same fate as the other Women Super League clubs who have passed through the Champions League play-offs: losing their teeth against a Parisian opponent.

PSG (4-4-2) : Kiedrzynek – Le Guilly, De Almeida (, Hunt, Karchaoui – Baltimore (Vitoria, 90e+4), Albert, Groenen, Geyoro – Martens (Bachmann, 73e), Chawinga (Katoto, 86e). Coach : Jocelyn Prêcheur.

Manchester United (4-3-3) : Earps – Riviere (Williams, 82nd), Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell – Naalsund (Lucia Garcia, 65th), Zelem, Toone – Malard (Miyazawa, 65th), Geyse, Galton. Coach : Marc Skinner.
